icon16 Forgetfulness Not as bad as we think

I just saw on television the other night that although a certain degree of forgetfulness is natural as we age over all baby-boomers actually have better memory skills than their younger counter-parts who depend on electronic gadgets to remember everything for them. We were raised having to memorize the multiplication tables were as the younger set have been allowed to depend upon calculators their school years. In other words we trained our brains how to remember things and they haven't. Cool! One for us older folks! Any one have any thing they would like to add about this or similar? I can't be the only 51 year old on this board.

I have always had a great memory, I guess it was because we had to memorize so many things in school. I just turned 43 last week but have noticed I forget more and it really bothered me. This has been going on for a couple of years now and I thought I was losing my mind completely! lol Glad to hear it's normal as we age! Thanks for the post about it! I have read to keep minds sharp and remember things as we age that crossword puzzles and other mind games help to keep the brain active.

My sister-in-law works as the head of a nursing home and she says working any kind of puzzle, sudoko, or even playing video games or computer games will help keep our minds sharp and stave off dementia. She also said as long as you know you have forgotten something it isn't Alzheimer's. That's a comfort because sometimes I feel like I have three brain cells and they are sooooo Busy! LOL!

Stress can also be a factor in forgetfuless. I can't determine for sure if I'm going crazy, starting Alzheimers or just stressed out! maybe all of the above lol. Between my husband, 3 kids, and 7 dogs I stay pretty stressed. One child has ADHD, one has Juvenile Arthritis, husband has back trouble from an accident years ago, and I have Fibromyalgia. Worse yet is husband and I don't have insurance ( thank goodness the kids do). Ok after reading this over it's settled. I am crazy and stressed.lol

I play games online to help retain my memory. My grandfather had that disease where you loose all memory. I am hoping "exercising" my brain daily will help me not ever get to the point I have no memory.

One of my main beliefs is that all adults should learn something brand new every couple of years. I have practiced this philosophy, and have found it to be very valuable. I believe it keeps me humble - because I remember what it's like to NOT know how to do something, and to start from scratch. This makes it easier for me to be patient with the younger folks in my life. It also keeps my mind active. I know from my years of teaching that when we are learning new things, our brains are actually making new neuron connections. My current new activity is learning how to garden vegetables organically.
