In May I moved from an apartment in the metroplex to an house on an acre that I'm buying. I mention that so that you'll understand the only tool I had was a shovel. What with buying this place and moving, I didn't have the funds to buy the things I needed.

I joined the local Freecycle and immediately received an electric weedeater and leaf blower. So I would suggest that as another source for gardening tools...or anything else you might have need of.
