Textbook vs. Common Sense
Here she goes again. I am off on one of my rants.
Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid people without experience but with memorised baby information. You know I've been going off on rants about healthcare here before and how they don't tend to LOOK at the child they're caring for, they just look at the CHARTS. This being the reason why you never see me writing which centile Alexander is under, because it PISSES me off when these people go blah blah blah about them.
Don't get me wrong, they do their bit and it's good to know where your baby is at. But the girl who does the weighing and meassuring in my area is just driving me bonkers. Today I walked in and said I've come because Alexander has turned one now and I'd like to see how he meassures up. So she opens the book and reads her notes from last time and goes 'Last time you mentioned it's cold and flu season and it was affecting Alexander's weight gain. Lets see a really good weight gain this week then!'
So I am quiet for a second, because I am easily pissed off right now and boy did that remark get me going. She's always like this, she doesn't even look at him, just straight into the red book.
So I go, well actually, take a look at him, his eyes are glazed and he's got a really bad cold bless him. He was sick over his first birthday and has not yet recovered. She's got her eyes firmly in the book and goes "Hmmm? Has he thrown up?" and I go "Uh, no. Blocked nose, cough, temperature. I mean, feel his forehead". She's writing notes for dear life going "Well I was hoping for a nice gain this week, but this doesn't sound good. Pop him on".
So he's gained like 120 grams, which is not a lot but still a gain. And she's plotting on the charts. "Weeeell he's still close to following his centile, but you know, he's dipping here and there so far whereas in the beginning it was a very steady gain!"
I'm leaning over and looking where she's looking. And I go "you're going all the way back to when he was 2 months old when you're doing these comparisons then, when he was mainly breast and bottle fed. Before he started burning calories by moving in fact?" She now looks up at me and goes, smiling.
"It IS indeed a fact that babies burn calories when they start to crawl, but that's also time for the parent to step in and introduce solids".
Hi. My son is one year old, you really thinking he's solid free? Go, mum.
So I go "Bottom line is it's cold and flu season galore out there, he was never sick in the first 10 months of his life, and it coincides entirely with when he started to become more active".
So we're arguing back and forth until she goes 'Well, did you want to meassure Andrew too?" GAH!
In the end she tells me to up his calories and says something about modern women being so careful about giving their children sweets and crisps that they are not getting their daily calorie intake.
So I just went "You encourage people to give chocolate over fruit, then? If that will make them follow their charts".
Loooong silence. I smile sweetly, take my son, wish the woman a wonderful christmas, and leave the room knowing I am not coming back for at least 2 months.
Rant over.
