sorry to vent

hello everyone, i hope all is well for you all. well as most of you know my dh and i have been through some S**ty things, we are now hitting another thing to possibly prevent us from adopting, here i go. as i am sure you all know we have to pass a fire inspection as part of the process to adopt, well last week a fire inspector came out and get this, in order for us to pass a fire inspection we have to redo all windows (making them lower and bigger) mind you we live in a split level and the way our split is the bedrooms are in the lower level. The way the windows are right now they are at ground level if we were even able to lower them they would be below grade and what is the chances of having wated problems then? I dont know what to do. DH and i are not rich and have put of enough money to really make us think about why we go through this.
We really want a family but the windows will be a huge job and right now we dont have thousands to put out on windows.
OH, by the way the windows are only 4inches to high from floor (they want 44" and our are 48") FOUR INCHES!!!!
Can I please get a break.
This is hard i have no idea what to do.

Oh Erin, I am so sorry everything is just so hard right now.

I know in our area we have this one inspector that is so hard to deal with too, being super picky about everything. (thank the lord we did not have to deal with him) Do you have an sw assigned to you yet? I would try giving them a call and telling them the situation and see if they have any intervention ideas. I know my sw was willing to be at the house during inspections just incase an inspector got a little nit picky. Call him back and ask him aside from putting in new windows are there other things we can do to make life safer? Like could you put in little ladders or something like that?

I know in our area they have started this egress window thing for all rooms in the "basement" area. Is there a door that leads out from that level?

I'm sorry this is happening I hope this is not a show stopper and just a minor bump in the road.

That sounds crazy! But I know when we bought our house, one storm glass was cracked and it had to be replaced before we passed the fire inspection. I thought that was stupid. Also a ladder had to be installed next to EVERY upstairs window!

I sometimes think these fire inspectors are on a power trip!

Good luck, I too would call my sw and give them the heads up.....I mean it's just 4 inches!

Oh Erin. I am sorry you keep getting hit with things like this. I like Kristine's idea of getting your SW involved. Sometimes you can get grandfathered in because of the age of your house. Maybe that is something to look into?

Good luck, I hope it gets figured out soon.

hello, thanks for all you thoughts and wishes. i really appreciate it. i have contacted my agency they are writing the state to see if they can get a waiver for our fire inspection. Hopefully that will come through for us. other than that dont know what is going on. we could be waiting up to 2 months to hear about the waiver. thanks for all the thoughts.

Ack! Stuff like that is just crazy! That's just ridiculous. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. I too thought about being "grandfathered" in. Do they do that?

Hang in there.
