Icon5 Home Study

Hi Ladies -
How long does a home study take? When should I start the process? DP is due in Feb & I want to adopt the little one asap. Any thoughts?

What a run around I've been getting about breastfeeding! All the medical professionals are all for it, but know nothing about it. Our fertility doc referred us to our GP or OB. The OB referred us to the fertility doc. The GP referred us back to the OB. The OB referred us to La Leche League who referred us to a lactation consultant who referred us back to my GP. Currently the OB is calling someone she knows at thge high risk pregnancy center at the medical school.

Hi Laura,
I'm not sure about your state but in my state(things could be different) you have to wait until the baby is born but you can call the lawyer who will be doing the paperwork to get started on it and then the homestudy with the socialworker can't be done until the baby is born and I believe in general it usually takes about three months.

A good site that talks about different laws in each state is www dot hrc dot org click on the following....Hope this is helpfull!!!! I think you're in Connecticut if that isn't right they do a state by state break down. I cut and pasted some information below.

> Home > Family > Parenting > Adoption

Connecticut Adoption Law

Connecticut law states that the sexual orientation of a prospective adoptive parent(s) may be considered when making a placement. However, it does not appear that petitions have been denied due to this regulation. See, for example, In re Jacob R., where the court found that a foster child should remain in the stable, loving placement of a same-sex couple’s home.

Additionally, the state’s anti-discrimination law probably prohibits the state from denying a petition to adopt based on sexual orientation.

Citations: CONN. GEN. STAT. § 45a-726(a); In re Jacob R. (2001 Conn. Super. LEXIS 2739); CONN. GEN. STAT. § 46a-81i (a)-(b).

Permits single GLBT individuals to petition to adopt? Yes.

Permits a same-sex couple to jointly petition to adopt? Yes.

Permits a same-sex co-parent to petition to adopt partner’s child or child of the relationship? Yes.
A same-sex co-parent can petition to adopt his or her partner’s child or child of the relationship.

Parties to a civil union are also permitted to petition to adopt each other’s child or child of the relationship.

Citations: CONN. GEN. STAT. §45A-724(a)(3); CONN. GEN. STAT. §46b-38nn.

I can't believe none of your doctors have a clue about induced lacation. You'd think they'd be able to at least look it up! Hopefully you will be getting some good info soon. Have any of the online places been any help?

My homestudy took forever because we also were wrapped up in doing 30 hours of training and then another 10 hours of medically fragile training. But, I'd say we could have had it done in less than three months. It took us closer to nine months. But... we did it all before we could have children in our home.

Wishing you much luck on all fronts.

i wouldn't bother talking to doctors about a-bf'ing, honestly. Unless (like me) you are extremely fortunate to find the RARE doctor that is passionate about bf'ing and truly informed about it, kwim? i'll start that bf'ing resource thread asap, and one of my close friends who posts on SK is an amazing resource of bf'ing info and you can pick her brain anytime i am sure!

in terms of homestudy, i think it soooo depends on what you are doing, where you are doing it, and so on.

we JUST started ours last month (like sent in the pre-app on the 14th of June I think) and we are having interviews 2 and 3 this saturday! (first interview was last saturday!) i have spent all week filling out paperwork, getting fingerprints etc...so basically we need our actual homevisit, and then make our portfolio, and we'll be ready...so i think we'll be approved late july or august at the earliest! whoa!

Hi Laura,
Sorry i got my information turned around above. You can start your homestudy now although it might be best to start it around DW's 6 month mark because sometimes the documents expire and it just gives you more time to prepare. You can also contact a lawyer now to draw some papers that will protect you and the baby if (gosh for bid) something happened to DW. Once the baby is hear I think you can then file for the second parent adoption paperwork through the courts.

Sorry about the wrong info above, I don't know what i was thinking there.
