Do you celebrate...?
Hey all, I'm new to this particular board, but had to drop in and say hello!
I'm Jessica... 24 years old, and the adopted daughter of the most amazing set of parents a kid could have asked for!
The reason for posting here is to ask those of you who have adopted children, if you celebrate your family birthday? Meaning, the day you actually became a family.
My parents met me when I was 5 weeks old on December 20, 1983. They took me shopping and to visit the doctor and all that good stuff, and then were able to finally bring me home on the 21st.
My grandmother's birthday is Dec. 20, so I never like to celebrate it on that day, but every year on the 21st of December, my parents and I spend the day together and have dinner. Dad wears the pink button up shirt that he wore the day they brought me home, and we talk about how far we've come as a family.
We used to joke about how my "warrenty" ran out when I turned 13... ok wait, we still joke about it... and we make jokes about how I'm not blood related to anyone in my family, so I don't carry their insanity genes! (kidding)
Oh yeah, did I mention I came to them in a little red CHRISTMAS STOCKING? Yep, I was the ultimate stocking stuffer, lol.
ANYWAY, now that I got way way off track... back to the question.
Do any of ya'll celebrate the day you became a family? If so, how do you celebrate?

Re: Do you celebrate...?
I know this is a little different but I thought I would share.
My mother is my natural mother and was married when I was very little. It took many years but they finally decided to have my stepfather adopt me. On August 15 when I was 13 years old we all appeared before the judge and the judge asked me what my wishes were. I was so excited to have my stepfather become my true dad and I was then officially adopted by him. I've celebrated that day every year since even though he passed 10 years ago. I call it my second birthday

Re: Do you celebrate...?
We did celebrate Lilly's coming home day. In fact, I used to get it mixed up with her actual birthday when filling out forms, etc. She was born on Sept 14 and I brought her home Sept 16.
It is so good to hear positive adult adoption stories! Thanks for sharing.

Re: Do you celebrate...?
my story is quite similair to one above but a little differant too.....My mom is my natural mother and was married very young to an extremly abusive alchoholic. Years later, she met my "dad" and he dated us both and when I was 3 they were married and I was adopted a few months later.
At my parents wedding their first dance was to "Dance little jean" by the nitty gritty dirt band and they danced it with me!
When I married my DH that was the first song I had played too and again, we danced it together.
I danced with my dad to the Brad paisley song "He didn't have to be" and very few people got the meaning but us.
Everythime we hear one of those songs we have a private little celebration of our own. I also have "dance little jean" played on the local radio station each year for their anniversary. I know I wasn't adopted yet but I feel like that was our official family day and so do they!

OOPS! For those not familiar with the song:
Dance little jean this day is for you,
two people you love stood up to say "I do"
Dance little Jean, this prayer that you had
was answered today, your mommas' marryin' your dad!

Re: Do you celebrate...?
Hi, I am so glad you stopped in hear Jessica and Jody, I love hearing positive adult adoption stories.
I have not brought my baby home yet but we have been matched. I imagine we will also celebrate our forever family day every year in a special way, maybe reliving the day, having a special dinner and just being a family, the three of us. I can't wait.
Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Chrissy and Jody, I love those stories they brought little tears of happiness to my eyes.

Re: Do you celebrate...?
We never celebrated gotcha day growing up. ( I was adopted as an infant) Maybe because I didn't come home until 3.5 months later because I was a preemie.
I haven't decided what we are going to do with our new child. Good thread to get me thinking though!!
