Default Sarah (new mom)

So i see that you are having a huge prob with dean taking his solids. I hope you dont mind if i share some things i have been told by other moms who have been there done that.

It almost seems like dean man has turned into a snacker liquid drinker. Like he only wants to drink and or eat snack food and guess what i have been there a month ago with Greyson only wanting to eat snack stuff.... crackers, puffs, toast etc. But you know after giving into it for about a week i decided that he was just refusing to eat the other food i tried to serve him because i was always giving into his whining/throwing/not opening his mouth etc.

So im wondering if your not doing the same? I can promise you that he wont starve if you only serve him 24oz of milk, his usual water and food he needs to be eating. Its fine to give him all those snacky things he likes for his snacks but for meals could you maybe try serving his hotdog with some fruit and if he doesnt want to eat the fruit then fine but dont feed him anything else. A few days of this he will say hey i am hungry and need to eat this.

Oh and G WILL NOT feed himself any fruit. I have to feed it to him. he doesnt like the texture of it so once i figured that out and started feeding it to him either with my fingers or a spoon he will eat anything i give him most days.

Im not saying at all to make him starve because he wont. But he cant based on what my pedi told me get enough nutrients from milk/water/juice alone. Its just not possible. So while it may be fine for him to go through a phase for a few days or even a week its not okay long term and it seems like its been awhile.

It really sucks that as first time mommy's everything has to be so DAMN hard!! We are always wondering if we are doing this or this or even this right all the while not really knowing what the hell we should be doing.

I was having huge battles with G up until a few weeks ago but when i decided to stop giving in and said to myself okay so what he doesnt want to eat the green bean he aint gonna starve things got better. I try to serve him something that i know for sure he likes and then things he is so so on. He has made a huge turn around in doing this and now will pretty much eat anything.

I always give him 2 choices of what he wants to eat. So say if i have planned to make him a grilled cheese, peas, and peaches and he turns his nose at the GC (hasnt happened..lol ) then i will make him a nugget if he doesnt want that then he just gets offered the rest of the stuff i had planned to give him and thats that. Doesnt get anymore food until the next snack.

I would seriously limit his milk intake at least at certain times so maybe he will start to eat mroe solids.

I hope some of this helps you and that others will chime in what what they have tried or been told by other mothers.

I know thigns have been tough for you so i hope at least this one thing gets better.

Allie, that sounds pretty much like what my pedi has said. Mine recommendsp to 16-24oz a day of milk. Also, she said if he's just drinking the milk, don't give it to him until after the meal.

Hey Allie,

Thank you for the post and ideas. I have tried a few things but I'll admit, not for too long. However, GET THIS....

Much to my total surprise yesterday, Dean ate half a buttered waffle for breakfast. He NEVER eats breakfast. He must have woken up hungry as he didn't eat dinner the night before. Than when I got him from daycare yesterday, they said he ate oranges for lunch. That was it but that's a BIG milestone because he has NEVER eaten an orange for me. Then dinner last night I made him a kids frozen meal and he had a handful of corn, 4 chicken nuggets and some french fries. This morning he would only eat a Saltine cracker but his report from daycare today said the following...which shocks the hell out of me but makes me SUPER happy.

BREAKFAST: Pancake, sausage, 1/2 biscuit and milk
LUNCH: Milk, Tuna, Crackers, French Fries and more Oranges
SNACK: Chocolate Wafers & Juice

So all-in-all it looks like things are picking up for the better. I did notice that he now has another top tooth that poked through so 5 on top and 4 on bottom, all within the last 3 weeks. Crazy!

I am in this same boat, and am hoping to use some of your ideas to try on Clayton. Clayton seems to dislike textures, which is a huge pain. Besides bread, cheese, and meats, he just sticks out his tongue and lets whatever is in there fall out. Such a pain in my a$$!!!!!!!! I tried giving him a half of banana tonight, and he did eat a few bites.

laura-
Greyson used to be like that and the only thing he would eat was puree.. You have to just keep at it and he will begin to be okay with it. Its because its new for him thats all.

Sarah- YAY WAY TO GO DEAN!!!!! Sounds like he is making some progress! I really think if you cut his milk intake down a bit he will start to eat more solids.

I dont know what page my ideas of things to feed them is on but have you thought about actually trying some of them? I actually have an 8 week menu made up for Greyson because it seems to make things so much easier and it keeps me from falling into the "kid" food trap everyday. Yes there are times when i feed him kid food but like tonight he actually ate 3/4 of a pretty good size salmon patty for supper, then ate peaches, carrots and prunes.

Ill start another thread with my 8 week menu and hopefully you can find some use out of it as i know you are short on time lately.

I hope things look up for Dean!
