Icon4 Internet addiction-a real mental illness?!

Interesting, just saw this on Yahoo:

Internet addictions: A real medical menace? : Christopher Null : Yahoo! Tech

A psychiatrist is suggesting that internet addiction be added to the Manual of Mental Disorders, which must be the psych's "go to" book. I totally agree since we have read about parents completely ignoring their children while addicted to games...to the point of death in that one recent story.

Ah hem, this line certainly describes me:

constantly on the computer as a way of connecting to the outside world.

yep, I am trapped in this window-less lab and in between testing patient samples, I am on the internet!!!!! Good thing I still know how to log off and tend to my real life. Sometimes.

I can see people being addicted. I do enjoy being on the net and hate when it goes down but I can and do walk away from it all the time and don't go crazy. I miss not seeing how you are all doing and talking to you all vs needing the internet to connect to the outside world.

So true, Jenn. I am more interested in catching up here than chatting with strangers, that's for sure! DH gets a kick out of playing a war game online and "talking" to others while playing it, but no way does he know these people and couldn't care less. He's just out to blow them up, lol. I use this site to stay connected, like I would a telephone!

Exactly! I think if my internet was taken away from me, you'd all be getting phone calls from me so I could keep in touch!

Im addicted and I'm proud of it. Thats not saying my "real" life is ignored though, just laundry at times (of which right now i have 1 load to fold, yay).

so sad that ppl ignore their kids for the sake of their games, dont they know there is a pause buttton?

Too funny! Remember when I drove hours to try and buy the Ergo? I called you at work since I couldn't be online!

ITA! I am usually on here when I am on the internet... I check email twice a day but that's about it. Maybe I am addicted to you all!
