Default Re: Happy Fat Tuesday

I couldn't figure out the pancake talk around here...until just now, I saw a blurb on my hospital intranet about IHOP celebrating national pancake day. For the uninformed like me:

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

In 2008, Fat Tuesday falls on February 5, which also happens to be Super Tuesday, on which a record number of states will hold their Presidential primaries. In the interest of embracing the democratic process, IHOP has postponed its celebration of National Pancake Day by one week, and will give away free pancakes on February 12.

I don't know if this is local or what, because they are asking for a donation to the Children's Miracle Network which is affliated with my hospital. But "free" pancakes might be national!

That is so funny. I did know that Fat Tuesday you are supposed to enjoy sweets before giving them up at lent. I never knew that about the pancakes. I was wondering what the fascination with pancakes was here!! Now I know. Thanks, Stacey.

That's great. These Tuesdays get me so nervous. I can't wait to see what happens tonight.

I'm giving up sweets for Lent again this year. I'm not Catholic, but dh and I like to fast something during this time. I figure if I could give up sweets last year while pregnant, I can do it again! I will be finishing off the peanut M&Ms and the fund-raiser candy bar we bought the other day. I have till midnight, right??

I've never seen or heard of a King's cake. Is that the same or similar to a paczki?

We do a King cake for Christmas every year. It tastes yucky so I don't actually eat it! I am sure this kind is different than your kind though!

Around here we eat donuts on Fat Tuesday which reminds me that I didn't eat one today. Bummer! Although you guys made me very hungry for pancakes! I was going to make them for dinner but Matt is out of town again and I really just don't feel like cleaning up.

Wow I didnt understand the thing about pancakes either, good to know though. Thanks Stacey. We dont do anything for fat Tuesdays because we are boring like that. This weekend is my birthday though, so we will be going out for a few drinks on Saturday, which is awesome since I havent had one in over 2 years!
