Bought an oven lock
I don't know if this is an issue or not for your LO and your kitchens.
Remember the story I posted about someone's child opening the oven door and crawling into it while it was hot!? Of course the mom reported some severe burns and the trauma was enough to make me worry when that day was coming.
Our oven is a wall mount and it under the cabinet. Such a crazy design! When I am old I am going to have a heck of a time bending down, getting large casseroles, etc out of there.
Thank goodness we just replaced our old oven with this one. It's amazing that the door isn't even warm to the touch when the oven is on full blast.
Anyway, just wanted to say that I tested out this device and it works, in case you need one, too. It was only $4 at Walmart.

It works by adhesive on a metal plate, sticking to the roof of the space above the oven's door. Then the latch comes down at 90 degrees. It's so childproof to open that DH needed my help the first couple of attempts.

Re: Bought an oven lock
Glad that it works. I'm going to bookmark it in case I need one. So far, I've never had a problem with the oven with either of the girls but Julia is MUCH more daring then Emma ever was so if it is going to be tried, Julia will be the one. Funny that hubby needed your help. Gotta love how childproof stuff stumps men!

Re: Bought an oven lock
Such a great idea, thanks for the link. I just noticed yesterday that Leo is now tall enough to reach stuff on our kitchen counters if he really stretches. I've been reminding dh forever now not to leave pot handles close to the edge. I hate to think about that stuff, but accidents do happen! Too funny that dh couldn't figure it out at first. Sounds like something I'd do... I still can't work our baby gate...

Re: Bought an oven lock
Thanks for sharing the link, I'll probably get one soon. Kian is very interested in the oven and will stand in front of it and try to peek in through the little window whenever I'm cooking. It has a built in lock on it but apparently when you use that lock it turns the oven off. I have no idea why it's there honestly, I'm sure I'm missing something about ovens because the purpose of it evades me.

Re: Bought an oven lock
We got one and it would not stay on. So I got another one and it did the same thing. they just don't like me. So we keep a gate up to the kitchen when I'm cooking. It pretty much comes down wheni 'm doing dishes and cleaning up from after eating. Then back up.

Re: Bought an oven lock
Mary Beth, does your oven have a self-cleaning feature? I know with our oven, it won't self-clean if it isn't locked... I'm sure there's a reason behind that, but I'm not exactly sure.

Re: Bought an oven lock
I bookmarked it, too. We haven't had too much of an issue because we don't cook very often. I guess there's an upside to everything!
Now, if only I could find something to keep Colton out of the dishwasher. We've had to resort to taking the knob off completely and using medical tape to keep it shut.

That is what I was going to suggest! I think the oven gets to around 500 degrees during the clean cycle. No one should want to/be able to open the door during that heat period!!!!

They make a multipurpose appliance lock that looks like a little push button buckle thing. It works on top/bottom fridge model and on dishwashers. I haven't needed to buy this one, thankfully! But maybe it will do the job your medical tape is doing.

Re: Bought an oven lock
Ooh! I will have to ask our landlord if we can do that. Noah likes to be in the kitchen with me while I am cooking.

Re: Bought an oven lock
Angelica, i dont see why he'd say no. its a safety feature that should be able to be removed should you move.
Lynne, i have the safety 1st link stacey just posted on my fridge. its great and was like $2 at walmart. thats what im going to get for the broiler. my only problem on the fridge is that the kids have pulled it backwards so many times that its coming off. the stick is losing its stick capabilities it seems. we only used it for about 6 weeks until derek lost interest in serving himself food at 2am. now caleb is tryng to do the same thing. he will open the fridge, open the drawer and bring me a potatoe (something he rarely eats). cracks me up

Re: Bought an oven lock
I think the oven locks during cleaning because it gets extremely hot, like 600-700 degrees...maybe more, so no one should open it at that point, there is another safety feature for ovens people should be aware of if they have a stove/oven combo that is fits between 2 cabinets, I'm not sure what it's called but it secures the oven to the floor so that it can't be tipped over, a couple of years a go a little 2 yo boy in my town opened the oven when it was not in use, and climbed up on the door and it tipped over on him and killed him...it was horrible. Our oven is only about 2 years old and it came with a device to secure it but I'm sure they make something for it that you can buy as well...

Re: Bought an oven lock
LOL at Caleb bringing you a potato, Jillian!
MB, we rarely clean our ovens too, so don't feel bad! In fact, I don't think I've ever done it for my own oven, although I don't usually make stuff that drips all over either. I did have to clean the oven at the house I used to nanny for though, so that's how I know about the lock feature. FYI, if you ever do use that feature, do it on a day where you can open the windows and get a nice breeze going. It really makes the house stink!!!
Amy, how scary to think about the oven tipping! I can see how it would happen though. At the townhouse I used to live at, if I wasn't careful when I let the oven door down, it would slam open and move away from the wall a bit. I never would have thought about it actually toppling, but I can see how it can happen. Thanks for that tip!

Re: Bought an oven lock
Ive NEVER cleaned my oven either. And hows this for gross... (mind you im a clean person). There was caked on grease, gunk and just NASTY stuff around the burners to our range top. It hasnt come off and we've lived here almost 4 1/2 yrs. My house keeper (god bless her, she is magnificent) was going crazy. she found something that worked. it however took the finish off the metal plating the knobs are on. she felt horrible but we saw how clean the range top was, it looks like new and told her forget about it, thats the least of our worries, our range is now CLEAN. 4 1/2 yrs of being there and she got it off.

Re: Bought an oven lock
Woohoo Jillian for your housekeeper cleaning off 4 and half years of cooking gunk!!
Our service cleaned our stainless steel cooktop and took the finish off of the gas burner rings. We had only had the thing for 6 months. Luckily, she felt bad and replaced all 4 burners for us when I left a note saying please don't use that cleaner again.
Glad your oven is clean now! I never used my self cleaning feature either when I had the locking mechanism on my old oven. This new oven doesn't have that locking lever though. Wonder how that new one works?? Now I need to look at it when I get home.
BTW, Angela, wonder if there was some grease perhaps where your sticky stuff wouldn't adhere for your lock. It does warn that it has to be completely clean to stick. No problems over here since we rarely cook in it (just bake alot!) and the oven was new. So far it's holding great.

Re: Bought an oven lock
That's scary to think about it tipping over. I will have to check into that safety feature.
