Using Utensils?
Hi Ladies! Sorry if this has been addressed recently. I have been MIA lately and didn't have much time to check in, let alone write.
I was wondering if your little ones are using utensils. If so, what utensils (spoon, fork) and on what foods? How long have they been using them. For the BTDT moms, when do babies usually start using the utensils and when do they start mastering them?
Emma just plays with her spoon/fork and makes a mess. Then she sticks her hand in the food and starts eating it that way. I'm trying to figure out what is normal.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Using Utensils?
Jackson is slowly mastering the spoon, if i put the food on it for him he can navigate his way to his mouth no problem. He is a pro with the fork which makes meal times much easier..not to mention cleaner lol..He will eat anything i usually eat with a fork, as for soup i drain the broth and give him the rest with a spoon, he eats cereal(milk drained off) with a spoon too, pudding, yogurt...its all trial and error right

Re: Using Utensils?
Jake can use a fork pretty well most of the time, as long as it's a smaller adult fork (ie, no plastic). Spoons? Not so much But even with a fork, if it takes more than one or two tries to poke something, he'll just grab it with his other hand.

Re: Using Utensils?
Pip is usually pretty good with a spoon she has a pretty good grasp of the food-mouth concept. That isn't to say that she still doesn't toss the spoon and dig in with both hands though! A fork is a little different, she has less patience with it.

Re: Using Utensils?
Noah loves utensils but is kinda hit and miss...he uses spoons a lot but often flips it over on the way to his mouth and so it ends up all over him. He really isn't interested in using the fork for it's purpose but we haven't been good about giving him forks...I'm working on getting better about it.

Re: Using Utensils?
Logan is ok with the spoon. He is pretty messy. He chews on the spoon mostly. When in doubt he has his fingers.

Re: Using Utensils?
Parker uses a spoon fairly well although he also tends to flip it over halfway to his mouth and spill it down the front of him. We haven't given him an actual fork yet just the plastic toddler forks and they are shaped like spoons just with points so he uses them like a spoon also.

Re: Using Utensils?
Lauren uses a spoon if I give it to her. I only let her eat non messy foods though. I don't like to clean up messy babies. Things like mashed potatoes she's a master at because they stick to the spoon. I think (I really can't remember) by the age of 2 they have the spoon down and I let them start eating messy foods like yogurt, applesauce, oatmeal, etc. I probably hold my kids back on using utensils, but by the time I turn them loose with them, they don't make too much of a mess.

Ben does that exact same thing!! I thought it was just something weird he did! Glad he's not the only one!!
But basically he really stinks at using utensils! He is a total mess at mealtime!

Re: Using Utensils?
Zach tries the spoon, but is better with a fork. He usually tries to use them and then gets mad and just picks the food up with his hand. haha
I just give it to him with his meal and i know he'll get it down eventually. I cant remember when my daughter finally figured it out.
