It's been going on for a while now and it makes me really sad. One day it just started out of the blue. I was suprised that he'd figured out my 1st name! My oldest never did until we told him. Well, it's a constant now and it's his first instinct. When he's excited and wants to tell me something he says "Brandy! Brandy!" not "Mommy! Mommy!"

I've tried ignoring it, but he just keeps yelling my name. I've tried correcting him and telling him to say Mommy...sometimes it works and sometimes he just says "No Mommy!" Right now any time he wants something I make him say "Mommy, please." and "Thank you, Mommy". He does it, but just in general still calls me Brandy.

How normal is this? Did any of your kids do it? Any other ideas for me to try?

This is definitely the saddest milestone so far.

Aw Brandy, I am sorry but he doesn't even realize. Is he hearing other people call you Brandy? Sometimes Brock will call me Amy (his dc provider) which breaks my heart but I try to tell myself that he just slips. FWIW, Brock calls DH using "Honey!" A LOT!!!! He just hears me talk and so he uses instead of Daddy. (((hugs)))

Steven used to call me MOM. I hate that name. Thats for older kids that are too cool to call their moms mommy. He would smile at his daddy and run to him saying "daddy!" He would then run to me and say MOM. This went on since he learned to talk until just 2 weeks or so ago. He now calls me mommy and its so darn cute. We figured out that my husband calls me mom allot. He will say stuff like hey mom, sissy has something to show you. So, we think he picked up on my name was mom. For a good 3 or so months we have made EVERYONE including daddy call me MOMMY when they are in ear shot of me. It worked. Maybe have even your DH say mommy around you? If you explain to the sitter and such to refer to you as mommy just until he gets it down, they shouldnt have a problem. I wouldnt. If I watched someone and they were trying to fix something like that. Its so hard. Im sorry. I hope it passes soon.

always mommy here, but thats because dh, and my parents when around refer to us as mommy or daddy. so thats what they ever hear. its rare that anyone calls me by my name.

i think just correcting him everytime, and being sure everyone calls you mommy and not brandy might help. hugs,

Heather, I know you're right--he really doesn't realize. He's not doing it to be ornery--that's part of the frustration! I'm sure he's heard people call me Brandy (including DH), I just can't believe he picked up on it! DH has been calling me mom or mommy so that Cam will hear that. Right now I'm on break, so no sitter. When my family is around they refer to me as mommy when talking to him. I guess he's just too smart for his own good.

Sometimes I hear Olivia say Amy, but both my kiddos call me Mommy. Coleton called me "honey" for a while, LOL, but never by my first name. I would just keep correcting him and try not to worry about it. Look at it more like a phase than a milestone. I promise, he will not call you Brandy forever.

Awww, I'm sorry it's bothering you. I'd take it as a compliment that he's intuitive and picks up on things. It's funny that you posted this because Brynna always calls me Mommy, but last night, she was looking at a picture and I pointed to each person for her to name them. When she got to me, she said, "Tera." I'd never heard her refer to me by my first name so I was surprised! I think it's sweet that my 3.5 year old still calls me "mama" most of the time. She refers to me to others as her mom or mommy, but when she's calling for me, it's mama. I love it.

Merrick used to call DH Bill. That went on for a while. I had to stop calling him Bill and call him Daddy. That did the trick. Now we only call eachother Mommy or Daddy. She will stop soon enough.
