Starting to feel defeated...
Hi everyone, new to the boards. My name is Megan. I am 31, and have been TTC for a year now. I have a mild case of PCOS and Endometriosis. Have had an HSG (so uncomfortable) and my tubes are clear. This month was my second try on Clomid (50 mg days 5-9). I produced 3 large follices, and one dropped, had an IUI Thursday and Friday. I am hoping and praying that it works (will know by Nov. 21). The doc told me that there is only a 10% success rate, which is a little discouraging. It seems a lot of people are on a combination of other things besides clomid. What is metaform?
Any success stories are much appreciated. My insirance does not cover injectables (I am guessing thats the next step). Can someone tell me how much they run?
Good luck to all!

Re: Starting to feel defeated...
Hi Megan,
I'm also on my second round of Clomid. My progesterone levels were low last round (7.1), so they upped my dosage to 100 mg from 50 mg, and my levels went down to .007, so they started me on the metformin two weeks ago. From what my doctor said, it helps stop the insulin resistance that goes along with PCOS, which I also have a mild case of.
So far, thank God, I have not had any side effects from either. Metformin came with all kinds of side effect warnings, but my dose is pretty low now. I haven't done any injectibles or anything, so I can't help you there, but I have been ttc since May and am here to talk if you need to.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Starting to feel defeated...
Hi, Megan. Metformin helps treat insulin resistance, which usually is connected to PCOS, and it increases the effectiveness of the Clomid.
The good news is that you are O'ing on the medicine . . . as for other options . . . some doctors do Clomid with a trigger shot to force the ovulation on time. Also, have you talked about possible treatments for the endo (like a lap, or suppression medication?). I don't know how significant the end is, but sometimes getting a lap to clean out the end works for some people when nothing else does. Don't give up hope! You are just starting out with IUI, and while a 10% chance sounds low, "normal" pregnancy rates are only 20-25%.
I can't tell you about injectibles - I'm not there yet. But I do wish you luck - there are more options available, and having a mild case of PCOS alone shouldn't stop you from getting pg!

Re: Starting to feel defeated...
A lot of views may come from people reading updates.
Metformin is used sometimes for PCOS. It can help some women ovulate.
If cost is a factor, you can do clomid with a small does of gonal-f or a similar med.
Cost depends on which med you buy and from which pharmacy. Call around. You'll get different prices for gonal-f depending on which pharmacy. One pharmacy may have a better price on follistim.
I mainly used the pens which had 600units. They make smaller amounts though. The cost is slipping my mind since it's been awhile.
Since I have PCOS, I respond very easily to gonal-f etc.
I certainly understand the frustration of costs. My insur. only covered diagnostic testing and b/w, u/s. Meds and ivf were out of pocket.
Metformin alone did nothing for me but my endo added 30mg of Actos and I ovulated immediately!
Good luck!

Re: Starting to feel defeated...
Hi ladies,
Got AF, then T-Giving happened, so I wasnt able to get more Clomid (due to the holiday) so I am taking it cd 6-10. I am sort of doubtful of clomid working, trying not to be too pessimistic, but the statistics stink My doc is suggesting moving on to injectables. Iam nervous, as my insurance does not over them and it seems like a crap load of $. I told the family no Christmas gifts this year, I am saving for a baby! Good luck to all of you!

Re: Starting to feel defeated...
Hi, Megan. Sorry about AF. I'm doing Clomid with some supplemental injectibles . . . maybe your doctor would consider that, too? It is slightly less expensive because you need fewer injections that way.
