Icon5 Questions for Ladybug(Eden)?

Hi,

My name is Heather and I hope you don't mind me finding you. Nancy
(Star622) told me you may be able to answer some of my questions .

My dh and I have been trying for almost 8 months now. He recently had a SA done(1st one) and I'm not feeling to positive about the results. They were:
vol-4.6
sperm concentration-69mil
total # sperm cells-317mil
motility-64%
morphology(strict)-5% normal

I guess my question is; with the morph being so low is it possible to still get pregnant naturally? Does the other #'s make up for the low morph? Or is the fact that the morph is so low mean we will need to have help from RE, like IUI? I havn't had my appt with my ob/gyn yet. But I'm just really curious and want to make sure I ask the right questions when I do go. I sure would appreciate any insight you might have..god or bad.
Again Thank you,

Heather

Hi again,

I looked up a few things and this is what I found...

For the morphology..

There are different numbers considered abnormal when it comes to morphology. Some want at least 30% normal; others say 12% is the lowest cutoff. It also depends on what the TOTAL count is. So if you have 20% normal morphology and 100 million moving then there are 20 million normal moving. But if you have 10% normal morphology and 300 million moving, then you have 30 million even with a lower normal morphology. You may want to take all data into account before making a decision on normal or abnormal.

So, from what I get from this, if you do the math, with 69 million sperm and 5% morph, then there are about 3,450,000 total of good healthy shaped sperm, which is still low. However, since the motility is good, then I would still think you could possibly get pregnant on your own.

I think IUI would be a really good option because it will put all the good sperm in the right spot after O. Plus, the sperm are concentrated, so only the good ones will make it through the centrifuge process and into the syringe for the insemination.

These are what is considered average or normal...although opinions differ..

• His volume (normal = over 2 cc)
• His count (normal = well over 20 million per cc)
• Morphology (normal = over 30%)
• Motility (normal = over 50%)

Since his other counts are high, I still think there would be a chance for a natural pregnancy, but I really think I would want to be a little more agressive and talk to the dr. about IUI. Or, the doc might want to put you on something like clomid so that there are more targets for the sperm to hit. Either way, I don't know if I have been much help.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I will see if I can answer them. I am happy to help, I am still learning a lot about this too.

Good luck
and

Eden

Thanks so much Eden!

That really helped us understand alot more. He is taking lots of vitamins that are suppose to help and then we are going to have another sa done in 8 wks. I am going to talk to the Dr about the clomid and find out more about IUI from a RE and my ob/gyn. I don't think we will get into see the RE till after the next sa though. You have been a tremendous help! I appreciate it alot!

Oh, no problem! I also forgot to tell you that a second SA test is really important because sometimes fluke things can happen. One of my DH SAs came back really low and the doctor asked him if he had been feeling bad lately and he had felt pretty bad for about 2 weeks and was dealing with a sinus infection, so lots of things can effect it. The RE said that is probably why it was low. I think my DH has had 5 or 6 and only one of them cam back absolutely dreadful, but the rest were still okay. No great, but okay! So, it is always good to wait a while and test again. It takes 8-11 weeks for the sperm to be produced, so its good to wait at least that amount of time so you can be sure to get a fresh abtch!

Good luck! Feel free to ask me anytime!
