Default How many times?

Those of you with MF issues.....Did you set a limit of how many times you would try some type of assited technology before you quit putting your money in that area? I'm getting ready to start my first IVF the end of January & I just wonder how many times we will venture down this road. It feels like gambling - which I don't normally do! I have heard others say we should set a limit before we start. My husband & I have said that we would do 2 cycles this year & then we just have to see….how about all of you? Have you had these discussions with your partners?

How do you know when to say when & when to keep trying? Those of you who have gone through more than one IVF – has your doctor recommended this?

I am trying so hard to be optimistic though. . .as my doctor says - guarded optimism.

Tweetness...

When we were told IVF w/ ICSI was basically our only option DH and I sat down and talked and decided that we'd give it a try one time and that if it didn't work.. we'd use the "Frozen Embryo's" if we had any . (each FET is 3500.. way better than 13,000) Luckily, and by the grace of God we were blessed with our after our first fresh IVF cycle!! We then just worked on paying for that cycle until it was paid off...

Ya really gotta do what you can do.. Setting a limit is a great idea that way you don't get caught up in the whole process.. and become overwhelmed with it.. I mean, I feel its worth it in the long haul but it definately could put a strain on things.. Just do what you feel is right and what you guys think you can afford..

We did the iui's as we could not afford ivf at all. We had $6000. set aside which gave us 3 cycles. It was really hard when the last cycle came up negative. I wanted to keep going but DH just couldn't watch me go through it anymore. The only IVF clinic near us is 4 hours away and each cycle costs $20,000. We chose to move on to adoption after our "limit" was reached because at least then there's a tax credit of $11,000.00

Good luck with your choice. Try to remember that $$ is not the only deciding factor. The stress and emotion were harder than the money for us.

On the plus side we conceived our DD in one cycle the first time around so miracles happen every day!

My doctor offered a package deal. Basically we pay a set fee which covers 3 full cycles of IVF, and if you don't get pregnant then you get your money back. It's a gamble because it could work the first time and then you are out that money, but I figured it was worth it. It took 2 tries for us with the ICSI (which was a seperate charge, as were the meds.) We figured that we would go through the 3 cycles (if necessary) and then give up.
