Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
Shilo,
That is a horrible story. Thank god it wasn't your child! So sorry about your cat. My stomach just sank reading your post.
quoted from Shilo
They might not be MORE likely to bite, the jury is out on that one, BUT when they DO bite, it is a helluva lot harder to stop it.

I agree.

Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
Thank you Andrea. It was pretty awful. And the worst part was that I just prolonged the suffereing. If I had just let the dog go at it, it would have ben fast, but because the dog was trying to contend with me and the upstairs neighbour as well, it took longer. I grabbed both back legs and yanked, at one point when the cat sumhow started to get away, but he just chomped again and i have deep scars on the inside of my thighs from his back legs. they arent huge animal but they are powerful, and I clubbed him with everything, even grabbed my umbrella nearby, leaned up against the door, (with a long pointy end) tried to stab him, but he kept going. When he was done, he went over to his bed, with the cat hanging limply in his mouth and put him down. Then he looked up at me with his blood soaked face and his tail tucked in between his legs and he looked SO ashamed. and sad.
Pitbulls dont just give one bite or snap, they bite and HANG ON until they are done.

Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
Oh Shilo,
How horrid! Did you put the dog down? You must have been a mess. I'm a huge animal lover. I am the moderator for a chat/email group for people that have dogs with cancer. I would do anything for an animal....but pits scare the crap out of me. I would never own one and if I see one I have to admit that I turn the other way fast. Just my personal opinion....but I feel that irresponsible breeding is the cause of so many problems in dogs....including many health issues.
As Bob Barker always says....remember to spay or neuter your pets!!! LOL

Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
Well, the ironic thing is that my roomate was scheduled to move into her new place the next morning. My roomate got home that evening, she had gone to the states to do sum shopping... and she just about fainted when she found out what her dog had done. This was a few years ago... about 5. She had just turned 19 and I was about 30. I had taken this girl under my wing when she was about 15. She was like a little sister to me.
I wanted to have him put down. I contacted the SPCA, and they said that a dog eating a cat dosesnt necessarily mean he is a 'vicious dog' so to speak. I guess because technically, even when we watch cartoons, the natural character of animals is.... dogs chase cats, cats chase birds/mice etc..... Obviously if he had bit a person, he would have ben destroyed. I could pursue the issue of having him put down.... but it wasnt an automatic decision in the eyes of the law, because it was a dog/cat incident.....
well, my roomate moved into her new place that night.... I didnt want to look at the dog ever again. Neither did my children. As it turned out, she ended up getting back together with an ex-boyfriend, who it turned out was selling crack, and some people that figured they were owed money by the b/f came to the hose one night and stole the dog as payment. .... As much as I was upset by what the dog had done... the outcome still saddened me. I have no idea where the dog is now.(unrelated, but now that roomate of mine has gone on to have a VERY good life for herself, has gotten rid of ALL the negative factors of her life)

Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
True any dog can bite, but most, in fact, I cannot think of any others, that have the jaw strength of a Pit Bull. We have a Great Pyrenees, gentle giant, and is super soft and gentle around the kids, but I still don't leave them in the yard with her alone. You just never know. While her bite could seriously hurt my kids, her jaws do not have near the strength of a Pit.
I wouldn't own a Pit with or without kids in my house.

When you bring in an aggresive BREED into your home you have no clue what the bloodline has in store. They can turn as can any dog but with an aggressive type there's more of a chance. So Nope!! I have a shih tzu LOL

Re: Would you have a pitbull if you had a child in the house?
Children should never be left unsupervised with a dog, fullstop.
Pits are people dogs, a well trained pit is a pleasure to own. The problem is that some people could not be bothered to put any effort into their dog and couldn't be bothered to supervise their kids around dogs.
I would rather have a robust, people loving dog such as a pit, than a smaller fragile dog, which due to it's size, may be intimidated by a child.
By the way, I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Chihuahua and I love both my dogs. No kids as yet, but I know for a fact what type of dog I would prefer to have around my future kids.
What do you guys think about Staffies? They were bred for the same purpose as pits, does that make them a 'mean' breed as well?

Poodles can be bigger than pits. Standard poodles are the size of Labs, and they can be pretty damn mean.
I'd rather have a well trained pit around my child that some yipey chihuahua or other high strung biter. Any breed can be trained to be mean, just as any can be the most loyal dog imaginable.
