Default Valentine's Day: what do you think?

I once had a boyfriend who refused to 'celebrate' Valentine's Day. He claimed that it was a holiday made up by retailers to make $. He claimed that he should not be forced to 'show love' on one particular day, but that he should be allowed to be romantic when the mood struck (which was, of course, never).

Said boyfriend always seemed to stir up a 'fight' between us right before birthdays and other holidays. Yep. He was a cheapskate.

So what do you think about Valentine's Day? Do you expect anything from your sweetheart? Do you reciprocate?

How about the singles? Does Valentine's Day make you hopeful or is it just depressing? Or do you even care?

"This day, contrived by mass mechandisers, flowers and the parents of red haired, buck toothed little boys and girls (that will someday grow up to be remakably beautiful), seeking recognition for their progeny, has arrived. It's all about presents, flowers, chocolate and cheesy cards. There is no escaping the retail stampede charging directly for our wallet. There is no escaping the phony good and loving wishes directed at every biped in sight, delivered with most well meaning insincerety."

I think it's a scam.

Diamonds are NOT my best friend. In fact, I'd be pissed if DH wasted his money on a diamond.

We don't buy gifts, but we do occasionally go to a nice dinner.

I LOVE Valentines Day. For Dh and I it's just a nice excuse to spoil each other a little with extra attention. It doesn't have to be about the money. My best memory of Valentines Day was my first with Dh...we were poor college students and I made him dinner and he made me a card. It was the most romantic Valentines Day! Last year was our first year with Kendall....we had dinner at home for the 3 of us and celebrated our love for each other and our new love for our new baby girl. No presents, just some cards and time well spent together.

I think it's what you make it (like anything in life).

I think having reasons to celebrate is great. It isnt great though if money is tight and gift giving becomes a financial strain. Celebrating love is really nice though.
Jacie, did you read through my newsletter on ttc after vas/tubal reversal? IT has the history of valentines day.
here's the link http://talk.sheknows.com/showthread.php?t=543196
Although the current version is VERY marketed, just like ALL the holidays/seasonal celebrations.
Personally, I dont care tooo much about VAlentine's day, but I do like to get the kids all some chocolates and i like to go out for dinner with d/h or just um... .

I think a lot of things are a waste. It's usually another way for spoiled women to perpetuate this issue.

I think it's a great day to spend some extra alone time with your spouse and show your love, as every opportunity for that is a great one. But as for chocolates, little teddy bears, roses, and diamonds, it's commercialized and ridiculous. I am not interested in jewelery, in fact, everything I own sits in a box. I also can't stand the boxed chocolates.

I need to elaborate on the first sentence, because my fingers left half the sentence out.

I meant it's another way for spoiled women to perpetuate the issue of "princess syndrome" that seems to be running rampant these days.

ITA with this. Those jewlery commercials make me nauseous. I have to say though, my wedding ring is a diamond and I like that.

As far as Valentine's Day...I think it is a commercial holiday. We certainly don't go all out with gifts or anything. I do get the kids a chocolate heart or something, but nothing big.

I think it is ridiculous. I can't imagine being upset that I didn't get anything. And I agree that a diamond would be a colossal mistake around here.
