Teacher Accused Of Discussing Abortion In Class

(KDKA) CANONSBURG A social studies teacher in a local school district is on administrative leave after talking to fourth-graders about abortion.

The teacher, who works in the Canon-McMillan School District, allegedly spoke to her students about abortion, while also voicing her opinion of abortion and describing the procedure to them.

Jim Stienstraw, a stay-at-home father, is upset because he thought he should have been the person to talk to his daughter about abortion.

Stienstraw’s nine-year-old daughter was in Mrs. McGuire's class when the discussion allegedly took place on April 5. He also said that if the teacher is allowed to return from her leave, that he and some other parents may take legal action.

A letter was sent out by the district to Hills-Hendersonville Elementary parents on April 6.

"The school district has taken immediate action,” said Dr. Nick Bayat, Canon-McMillan superintendent. “The district did not have prior knowledge of the subject matter. The teacher is now longer in the class room, pending completion of an investigation with interviews of parents and children."

The teacher is accused of having the students vote on whether or not they would have an abortion or have a baby and put it up for adoption – after she said that she is opposed to abortion.

A regularly scheduled school board meeting takes place Tuesday night and the situation is slated to be one of the topics of conversation.
