Taking kids to the slaughterhouse.
Ok, new topic, as requested!
As a former vegetarian I have pondered the following: what do you think of letting your kids see what it is that they are eating (in regards to meat)? Nowadays meat comes in tidy little packages from the grocery store. People have lost sight as to what they are putting in their mouths.
So, do you think it would be ok to educate kids about meat? Start off at a farm, let them get to know the animals, then let them see the animals slaughtered and cut up?
I know it sounds gruesome, but it is a reality of life. It was not so long ago that children were very aware of where meat came from.
What do you think?

Re: Taking kids to the slaughterhouse.
There isn't any reason not to talk about where meat comes from, and no reason to shield kids, after a certain age, from slaughtering of said meat. However any person who took their kids, that have no interest in farming, to the farm specifically to see an animal harmed would have to be off their rocker.

I probably wouldn't do it but I don't see a problem with it. I'd be more likely to do what my grandmother did with us. She took us fishing and taught us how to gut, clean and cook our fish.

Is this a joke?

Yes, that is true, however times have changed quite a bit over the last 200 yrs. No need to gross them out, give them nightmares when we have Charlotte's Web.
A child growing up on a farm would think nothing of it as it is a norm in their life, however a city or suburban child doesn't need to witness how these animals are killed as it's not their day to day norm.

Well, one could argue that eating meat (as most kids do) is a daily norm. So, why hide where it comes from?

Re: Taking kids to the slaughterhouse.
Why I would probably tell my son about, I would never take him to go watch it. If he wants to be a farmer when he gets older, then yes, he will have to see it. But to want to see it just because, I would take him to a shrink.
