This is a discussion on So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota within the Debate forums, part of the Say Anything category; You should be forced to carry and deliver the baby?

The bill ...
The bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman's life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
the child didn't ask to be conceived that way....besides if the mother really wants one then all she has to do is to go across the border into North Dakota or to the east or to the west. South Dakota had roughly 800 some abortions last year and rape/incest were a very small minority. Majority of them are for a matter of 'convience'

Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
I agree with ChickenLittle. It isn't the "potential child's" fault. And yes North Dakota's a skip away if abortion is the option she wishes to choose. Also there are other options as well. The woman does not have to raise the child. There are many couples waiting to adopt.
South Dakota is a conservative state and one of the governer's jobs is to try to uphold the opinion of those he governs.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
Don't forget, if you're a person who shouldn't carry a baby you can't get an abortion either. Unless you're on deaths door, they don't care. (and even then they have to think about it)
The bill they passed last month, HB 1215, bans all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest, including cases that threaten the health of the mother;the only exception is if the mother’s survival itself is at risk, and even in those instances the doctor must “make reasonable medical efforts under the circumstances to preserve both the life of the mother and the life of her unborn child.”
Honestly I am okay with them putting some restrictions on abortion, (term limits) but this is absurd. This seems to be a growing trend all over the country, say good bye to first term abortions, birth control and IVF. Say good bye to your rights.

Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
I wanted to add that if you believe the stats on rape abortions then you are very very naive. When the majority of women do not report rapes, they will not tell that a pregnancy came about because of it.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
As someone who has been raped and conceived a child from it, I think it is sad that they will ban abortions for woman who are NOT emotionally ready to have a child. It isn't that they can't raise it, it's carrying a baby that they were forced to have growing inside them by someone who only cared about having his "fun". A woman or child who is raped should have the CHOICE in what they do with the baby they have been forced to carry. Yes, I am a Christian, but I do NOT believe ALL abortions are wrong. Limits, yes, I would agree to that. I do not believe in partial birth abortion, that is just wrong. If you've waited that long, you're just plain out of luck.

Lovely. I can just picture traumatized rape victims, 13yr girls who didn't really know what they were getting into, women with fetuses in their wombs that are not going to live past birth skipping merrily across the border. Great solution.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
yes and if for rape it was allowed, how many women would claim it was rape just so they could get an abortion without going across state lines?

Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
So screw a rape victem even further due to potential abuse that has not happened? Could abuse happen? Absolutely. Why should someone who has been raped have to suffer for someone elses idiocy when if they just allowed abortions there in the first place this would not even be an issue.

So the poor women who were raped and can't afford to hop, skip and jump over the border to another state for an abortion gets screwed again. I can just imagine the look on many women's faces who have been trying to have children for years when the see the CLOSED signs on the IVF clinics. Sad all around.

They would have to file it with the police. I doubt many women are going to go through an entire investiagation to bring up rape charges on someone. That could really open up a can of worms. There might be a couple of false rape charges, but I doubt very many. And the women who actually are raped will probably be looked at as liars.

The above is if they actually allowed for rape. I didn't finish my post Grrrrrr

Most women who are having an abortion in the late 2nd or early 3rd trimester aren't having it because they aren't ready to have a child (or for other reasons deemed "convenience" reasons). I was 100% against this procedure, until I read THIS. Here is a clip from it, but I definitely suggest you read the whole story. This woman's blog really is an eye opener, for me anyway.

OK.
If you really want to understand, I'll tell you.
They put me on Magnesium Sulfate in an IV in the hospital. If I had responded to that, yes, there would have been a chance that we could have made it a few more weeks.
However, overnight, while on the IV, the disease progressed anyway. I had horrendous headaches that required morphine to make even only slightly better, and became seriously nauseated and vomited constantly.
My blood pressure continued to rise.
My kidneys were shut down--I wasn't producing urine at all.
I was heading into multiple organ failure--liver, kidneys, etc.
The disease was not responding to the medicine.
The only option I was given that morning was to either deliver my son or have an extended dilation and extraction. The doctors would not allow me to continue the pregnancy.
I already explained why I chose the D&E over delivering the baby. I thought delivering my son, as much as I wanted to meet him, would have been cruel to him, cruel to the doctors that would have to try to save him, and cruel to me.
I feel like this has already been clearly explained here in my blog.
Trust me, I wanted these babies more than anything else in the world. No one goes through what I went through to get pregnant and makes the decision to terminate the pregnancy lightly.
The reason I got angry, Holly, is that NO ONE should feel they have the right to make me explain my choices. Your demands for explanation, and you throwing God into the discussion as well, shows your ignorance and unkindness. I cursed you out because what you said HURT me. Hurt me deeply.
Now do you understand?
Somehow, I doubt it.
While I personally wouldn't chose this (I don't think), and I think it is disgusting that this could possibly be used to abort a healthy baby with a healthy mother; unfortunately I think this procedure needs to stay available for the people who actually need it.
I would be for putting restrictions on this, including to preserve the health/fertility of the mother as well as the life. I would just hope that it wasn't abused.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
Soon that was sad. I can not imagine having to make a choice like that. I don't think I would have made the same choice as her, but how heartbreaking either way.
Re: So if you get raped in the state of South Dakota
This law is just wrong on so many levels.
I wonder if the docs would have to let an ectopic pregnancy progress to the point until the woman's fallopian tube is in imminent danger of bursting? Up to that point, the woman's health is at risk, but it doesn't become a survival issue until the tube actually bursts.
It's all fine and good to say that the woman only has to cross the border to get an abortion, but how does someone do that if they don't have the means to travel? What about a 15 year-old who is a victim of incest or rape and can't travel so easily?
It seems to me that they intentionally made this law so restrictive so it would inevitably be tested by the Supreme Court.
