Default New_birth

I was reading one of the threads, and read that your son has diabetes. My DD does also. She was diagnosed at 3 and is now 41/2. How old is he and what regiman is he on? My dd is on Lantus and Humalog.

Hello

Not everyday you meet someone with similiar circumstances. I almost was going to extend an apology, but that sounds too 'defeatish'.

Daryl was dx on July28-05 so he was 3 at the time. Right now he's on 3 types of insulin, BUT depending on his blood levels, he usually only gets two (which is about 8 times out of ten) As follows;

NHP

Regular

Novalog

We are thinking about getting him a pump in a couple of yrs. He's pretty used to the shots...doesn't cry or try to run away.

He just had his lab work done(hmg) about a couple weeks ago, and the dr said he'd call back it something looked bad, but he never called back.

At first I was real restrictive w/ his diet, until the edo told me...look he's a kid..don't deprive him of sweets. Plus he's a little underweight anyway. Actually the meds seemed to help him PUT on weight, and now his weight is pretty steady.

What about you, how did you find out? How is your family dealing? Any diet changes,or any major lifestyle changes for the whole fam? I think when parents first find out
we're almost afraid to bring ANY sugar into the house LOL!

...typo, that was supposed to read NPH. not nhp.

Does your dd have typeI or type II? Daryl has type I. Sometimes ppl get the two confused, and think it's related to diet. You should hear some of ppl's comments, "huh, how did he get that" in a way that they think it was from his diet. Only 5% is hereditary, and that part doesn't apply, as no one in my fam has typeI. My grandfather has the adult onset (type2) and is now completely blind and on dialysis.

Geesh, been a long time I posted on a board without the edit feature ACK.

Anyway, here's the thread that tells how we found out.

Maddie has type 1. No one else has it in our family's. THey have thyroid disorders (as does Maddie now) and the doc's said that the thyroid and the diabetes is related (an autoimmune disease)

I had had strep throat, and my doc said that to watch out for strep in my kids as it could come in the form of vomitting or headache or soar throat. (this was thurs) by Sat, Maddie was complaining of a headache, and I thought she had strep, so I called the doc, and then she started throwing up. so I called them back and said that she just had the flu and that I didn't think I needed to come in. Well they siad to come, so we went and they didn't even do a strep test, they were just going to give her the med. In the meantime, she had been peeing and drinking, and peeing and drinking. and the nurse had made mention of it and I had said that she is always like that, and that she had been getting a little worse with it(we were trying to potty train and it wasn't going well, she would just pee ALL the time) and so the appointment got over, and we were getting ready to walk out the door, and I turned to the doc and I said is this something to be worried about, her peeing all the time, and he said they would do a urine test to see if she had ketones in her urine, and she did, so he sent her strait to the hosp. he wouldn't even let me pick up my mom so she could watch my son, he wanted her at the hosp, right then. So we got there, and they checked her sugar, and her sugar was 1172. She was starting to be where she couldn't even wake up anymore, and I know that if I would have went home, I would have put her to bed and I don't think she would have woken up. She was in intensive care for a day or 2. Her sugar wasn't coming down quick enough. She was in there for about a week. They sent her home at about 300. And then she was on nph and humalog which I hate. SO I asked the doc to put her on Lantus and he did. I also would love for her to get the pump. The docs have said that 9 is about the perfect age, but he might allow it around 6-7. Maddie just went last week to the doc and her a1c was 8.1 which is down a little from her last one which was 8.8. They doubled her insulin which has really been working. Her average for the last 3 months was about 300! yikes.
It has been over a year now for us, and it gets a LITTLE easier each day. SOme days are great and others are hard. We are learning signs to watch for in her. When she is high she gets terribly crabby, and when she is low she gets hungry. We have gotten a little more leniant with her food. Her docs say the same thing about letting her have what she wants(w/in reason)
I am not computer savey and I don't know how to talk to you offline. But would love to stay in contact with you.

Wow, her #'s were thru the roof. I'm glad that the dr. requested her urine to be tested. My ds only stayed in the hosp for 3days. After reading about you mentioning the ac1, I should call just to see if it's risen or been lowered. He usually only has one high level a day (the past week it's been more like 2 tho.)

Can I ask why you didn't like NPH? Is it because it's slow acting? I've never did much research on the others, i just figured they gave me the standard insulin. About offline, just click on my profile and where it says 'PM' you just send your text, but I have no probs if you want to keep it here.

I didn't like it because she had to eat so much food every 2 hours. They wanted her to eat 30g of carbs for snack and 60-70 g. of carbs for meals, and it seemed like she was always eating. And it became such a battle because she was never hungry and I had to force her to eat. ANyway, with the lantus (thats her slow acting)she eats what she wants when she wants it. I give her her lantus in the morning, and then when she eats(meals) she gets a shot of humalog according to what she eats. And I give her humalog when she is high during the rest of the day.(which is hardly never now.)

I just asked about novalog at the doc, last week, About if Maddie should maybe switch to the novalog. And he said that the humalog is supposed to work best in the little kids. They (the manufacturer) had done testing in little kids with the humalog, and it seemed to work the best. Just a bit of info. I don't want you to think that I think you should change your regiman or anything, I just wanted you to know what he said.

~about the offline thing, I tried to pm you, but it says that I don't have access to it. It doesn't bother me either if you want to keep it here. The other ladies might not like it though .
