Default Childless by choice

We are a group of adults who all share at least one common desire: we do not wish to have children of our own. We are teachers, doctors, business owners, authors, computer experts - you name it. We choose to call ourselves "childfree" rather than "childless," because we feel the term "childless" implies that we're missing something we want - and we aren't. We consider ourselves childFREE - free of the loss of personal freedom, money, time and energy that having children requires.

I really don't care if people choose to not have children but why do they make it sound as though having kids is like having cancer?

Are these people selfish?

I don't think they are. I don't think they make it sound like they are a cancer either. I think it is just their rebuttal to the "Awwwww why don't you wanna have a baby?" remarks. That would get old after awhile.

I would say it's selfish to have a ton of babies, just because you like the feel of a new baby. (I have known more than a couple of people who do this, YUCK!)

If they don't want to have kids then I don't think it makes them selfish at all. People don’t have to have reproduce just because they have the capability to do so.

I don't think they are selfish, either. Until we have these people writing articles in our newspaper about how they don't feel their tax dollars should go to support chidrens programs, etc....bc they don't have children.

My biggest beef with that is bc it is the future generation that will pay for them as far as social security and medicare go. So people who do choose to have children are contributing to society. Some countries are starting to have really low census as far as current births and are paying people to have more children (as in tax credits, etc...) bc they realize what a detriment this will be to their society economic wise in the future.

I agree with that too. We all need to support the community, no matter if we have children or not.

I don't have a problem with people choosing not to have kids, actually it lessens the population load a little.

As a caregiver to the elderly I have come across many people that never had kids. Their family was all gone and many of them had regrets that they were living out their golden years with alone. Kind of sad really.
