Default Question about Laps

My wheels are once again spinning after clinic hours. I find myself constantly trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with my body-why can't I get pregnant? I'm sure you all can relate. I spend countless hours researching the net trying to diagnose myself and wondering why my RE hasn't performed certain tests in the beginning to rule out the typical causes of infertility while other RE's do. My husband thinks I'm nuts because I question (not doubt, just question) my doctor's decisions but I'm too chicken to actually ask. Blah. I'm a freakin' basket case! Anyway, I was wondering if your RE's perform a laporoscopy as a standard diagnostic test in the beginning? Mine does not and hasn't ever mentioned it-why? I mean, what if I have endometreosis or PCOS? Are there obvious symptoms that I'd have to have in order for him to suspect? Why isn't it routine in the beginning of an infertility work-up? I'll get to bombard my RE with all of these questions (well, if I can muster up the courage) next week but until then, can anyone help? Love you, girls.

Hello Angie,

My RE has never done a lap. and endometreosis runs in my family big TIME. My mom had to have a hstyo by age 32, her mom had one, and pretty much all the women on my moms side had one! Which freaks me out! Being 29. The only thing is, I have never had the pain during intercourse, the excrutiating pain my mom went through, ovarian cysts or any type of endo symptom. My OBGYN is the one who actually asked if I had ever been tested. The only advice I can give is to always ask your doc. the questions you have. Write them down b4 you go in, so that way you dont forget the questions. I am an RN and the most important thing I tell my patients is ALWAYS ask questions. That's what the DR is there for..... Sorry for the book.. Hope this helped a little!

Good luck!

Amber

Years before I started treatment I had to self diagnose my endometriosis, although some women have no signs. I couldn't get a Docotor to take merseriously and when an OB refused the fact that I had endo but I had all the symptoms I went to an RE/OB and he immediately ordered a lap/ hysteroscopy and found my endo. I would literally go to Barnes and Noble and read books until I found out what was wrong with me. If you are not happy with your treatment then I would move on.

Hi,

I had a hycosy that checked my tubes, i also had an internal where they could tell by pressing down on me if i had any cysts etc??
I also had lots of blood work and dh had analysis on his side.

we had to do all that before we could start iui.

I write everything down before i go in and make sure all my questions are answered. i also bought"infertility, fertility for dummies" its been a god send it is so straight forward and i learnt alot from it.

hugs

Default Re: Question about Laps

I am having a lap done this Thurs. This is after 6 rounds of Clomid and IUI's. My Dr. thinks I may possibly have some endo., but he suspects minimal amounts. Still, since I am not getting pregnant even with good cycles and great sperm, he believes it's the next step before we go on to injectibles. I don't have painful periods but I have a bladder condition called interstitial cystitis which endo. apparently often goes hand in hand with. If this is what's causing my infertility, I don't want to go further until I have the lap done as I feel as though then I would be just spinning my wheels. I would bring up your concerns with your Dr. Maybe this would be a good next step for you. I can totally relate to the "what is wrong with my body" thing. It's so frustrating!!

I had a lap done after hsg showed a possible blocked tube. Endo was discovered during the lap. Many don't do laps because there is a debate as to their usefulness. I think they should be standard... find the exact problems and come up with a course of action from there. I'm going for my second lap so that my RE can get what the OB left in during my first lap.

I have never had a lap but I feel like that is where I am headed. Doc says if nothing in next two IUI cycles, it may be warranted. I think most of them try to save it until they determine things aren't working. I agree though, it would be nice to know earlier. I would bring it up. Good luck.

Thanks so much for sharing your stories and offering suggestions. I'm going to take your advice, be brave, and ask questions. I like the idea of writing my thoughts down so I don't blank out once I'm in the exam room. As always, you all are such great supporters!
