Icon5 IUI and sperm wash question,,

I had a tr 5 years ago with no success , and tons of treatment already but have never done the IUI route. The closest RE is no less than 2 hours away, so I've been calling OBGYN's to see if they do IUI's. Well they do but 2 of the offices do IUI without washing the sperm, and costs $300 w/ u/s moitoring, only 1 office that I have called washes the sperm and costs $570 w/ u/s monitoring. Can you have an IUI done without washing the sperm?? Is that safe? Had anyone ever done an IUI without washing the sperm? In your opinion which would you go for??

thanks for any input,,
Misty

from what I understand, if they inject the unwashed sperm directly into the uterus, you will have terrible cramping. I think it has something to do with the semen..the reason to do the sperm wash, is to make sure they have the best quality sperm they can get therefore increasing your chances..

I'd do the washing - there's a lot more risk / complications possible with unwashed sperm being used in w/ IUI

Thanks for the input,, I think I'll go with the washing, I really didn't think you could do an IUI without the washing. Maybe my 5 year wait will come to an end,,,, I'll come out of the dark and start posting more,,, thanks again,,,

Hi there...the reason for the washing also is to avoid infection...so I'd definitely go for it!

Hi Misty,

I also had a tr in Nov of 07 and haven't had any luck yet. We are doing an IUI at the end of June. My Dr. says they wash it so they seperate the sperm from the semen and get the good swimmers. They also wash it so get rid of any bad bacteria and to reduce chances of infection. Don' t know if that helped any. Best of luck to you

I can't wait to get started with this. Gonna make an appt, and talk with the Obgyn that does the washing. It'll almost feel like starting all over again.

Thanks again,

I don't think it's called IUI (Intrauterine insemination) when the sperm is not washed, I believe it's ICI (intracervical insemination) and the unwashed sperm is deposited directly in your cervix opening, not inside the uterus, therefore is simpler and less expensive.
