Default business trip next month may conflict with IUI schedule

my boss just mentioned she'd like me to join her on a trip to germany next month. I checked the calendar and it is the exact same timing as i would be having my IUIs, bw/us.

her trip is already scheduled--and i'm not sure how to approach the topic with her. i tried to suggest that i could dial in, but she'd really like me there.

she still has to get approval from her boss for me to attend--so maybe that will block it.

but how should i handle this? any suggestions? i'm not sure i want to tell her about the treatments.

Hmmm...that's a tough one. Any chance you can just tell her that you already have "family plans" during that time? I don't think you need to get too personal or say any more than you are comfortable with. Try using either "personal plans" or "family related plans." Those tend to get people to not ask more questions.
Good luck with this.

It’s been my experience that when you are upfront with your supervisor about your treatment protocol you have far fewer issues at the office. My supervisor knows that I need to leave the office frequently for scans and blood work and there are no questions asked. He also understands that the drugs used in my treatment can cause moodiness and irritability - not that I am EVER moody from the drugs ; )

I waffled on the issue of sharing this with my supervisor but ultimately decided on full disclosure. Your supervisor is far more likely to let you skip out on a business trip if he/she knows that you are making this decision due to medical care and not an aversion to travel. At the end of the day, family is more important than work and a good supervisor will do everything in their power to help you achieve a balance without sacrificing your treatment protocol.

Viel Glück!

thanks sarah. i think you're right. and my boss and i are fairly close--so i'd feel more comfortable telling her than any previous bosses. when the topic comes up again, i'll confide in her.

I had to confide in my boss and also the HR lady, because of the different appts I was taking, and having to come in late. I didn't want it to be an issue for them. Or thinking I was slacking. And they have been very supportive, and have said what ever I need to do they are behind me. So I don't think it would hurt to tell her. And it may actually make things easier?

I'll be the other side of the coin...as someone who had 5 IUIs, then a BFP, then a 3rd m/c, then a 3 month wait then a BFP (that was a long intro for those who didn't know my story)....I would go to Germany. Hind sight is 20-20, but unless you have a deadline (like age etc) I wouldn't give up a trip like that for one round of IUI.....believe me it's easier said than done, but I gave up a lot of living in the TTC world...that's a great trip.

Hi,

Id be honest and tell them exactly whats going on,
I am a college tutor, i told my head that i was trying tretments and if i fell i would want to leave asap due to the risk of the job and previous miscarriages.

Infact i actually left work and have took 2 yrs out to be able to enjoy my son before he grows to old! also i wanted to be able to fulyy look into concieving without pressure, i am lucky as my partner has a very god career,
though he has had to explain to his boss that he has a hormonal lady that will ring him in tears or scream at him when he is with clients!! oops!

good luck you will be fine

hugs
toni
