This is a discussion on Success with One? (kinda long) within the Invitrofertilization (IVF) forums, part of the Trying to Conceive - Infertility category; I know some of you know me, but I thought I'd reintroduce myself.
I'm Julie, mom of one-...
I know some of you know me, but I thought I'd reintroduce myself.
I'm Julie, mom of one-year old twins conceived on my 11th IUI as a last ditch effort because we had leftover sperm from my failed IVF in May. It was my last hurrah to TTC and it worked.
Anyway, after meeting with my new RE, he read my chart and asked me if my old RE reimbursed me for my failed IVF, I gave him a flabbergasted look and he said, "because they broke your eggs trying to ICSI them due to an inexperienced lab tech." WHAAAAT???? It was right there, in black and white on my chart. "Broken eggs, possibly due to egg quality, most likely due to lab tech lack of ICSI experience."
He also said, "Obviously you don't have poor egg quality, because you got pregnant with twins 2 months later." Ugh.
He agreed that me getting pregnant with another IUI was a long shot, given that we're dealing with severe MF.
So, we're going to transfer one 5-day blast only (While I love my twinkies, I delievered them at 32 weeks and I'm afraid to get pregnant with another set). Although he said it's my choice.
He thinks I should have success. Would you agree? Should I risk putting two in? I'm scared either way.
I think one is a lovely idea. Considering you've already proven that you are very capable of becoming pregnant I think it is a good idea. Although, I am sure there are a ton of people that would advocate for two. Do what your instincts tell you.
My RE has very high success rates with eSET - the elective single embryo transfer. If you only use top quality 5 day blasts, the rate is pretty much the same as for transferring 2.
Hi Julie-
Welcome to the boards! I agree with the other ladies. 1 seems to be your best bet and also just for your peace of mind since you have twins already and they came a little early. But if you are leaning toward putting back 2, talk it over with your doctor and discuss all of your concerns. I'm sure you will both be able to make the right decision.
And I would be pissed about that failed IVF cycle..I hope you get some money back!
Good luck
Cindy

thanks everone~ I know in my head transferring one is the best decision for me. My heart wants to transfer as many as possible because I'm scared it won't work if I don't. But, having twins in the NICU was heartbreaking and I want to cook my next baby as long as possible.
I guess the question you have to ask yourself is: if you don't get the singleton pregnancy you are looking for first time which of the other scenarios would you prefer? A BFN and doing a FET or a twin pg? Do they know why you had your twins so early? Good luck with your decision.
I can totally understand where you're coming from. We have unexplained IF & got PG the 1st time w/ twins. I was able to carry them till 36, but my OB was always surprised I made it as far as I did (I've had 2 surgeries on my cervix). This IVF cycle we are only going to transfer 1 emby unless they aren't great quality. As much as I love H & B, we can't afford another set & it makes me scared to think if I could carry them as long (I bleed thru out my 1st trimester & my RE said we would loose one). I agree go with your heart!
BTW, I would TOTALLY call your old RE & talk to them about the $$. That's 100% ridiculous!!

I agree with all other posts -- TRUST your instincts!! They will never let you down.
I would compose a very concise, very meaningful letter to old RE and note in there that you are considering calling the medical board and your attorney for advise as to what legally your options are -- I guarantee you'll have a financial offer by the close of business on the date of the receipt of the letter.
Best of Luck!!!

I agree with Justine, you should start with a 'mildly threatening' letter to RE's office. You DESERVE some or ALL of that money back from that failed cycle!!
I think you should follow your heart and I wish you TONS of luck!

Julie, I've been watching your thread here because I may be in a similar position as you. I've now had 3 failed IVF attempts and have only ONE 5-day embie frozen... I'm about to turn 44 and not sure if I will attempt any additional fresh IVF cycles. Not sure if what my chances off success in doing a FET with only the one...?
I have a 3 yr old DD from a natural pregnancy following two years of trying and 4 m/c's (2 blighted ovums, 2 chem pgs) just before we were about to start doing all the testing in preparation for IVF. I was already in my late 30's and got pg just after my 40th bday...
Good luck in whatever you decide. Good thoughts and for you!

I am with you. I am pregnant with twins and will never transfer more than one again. Twins can be scary. I am prepared to deal with the consequences of transferring only one, which may mean it takes twice as long to get pregnant but that's okay with me.
