Default PIO Shots

Give me all the info you can. I am real nervous about doing them. I even thought thank goodness I didn't have to do them. I should have kept my mouth shut. TIA

Default Re: PIO Shots

Well I haven't done them yet but I've look for a LOT of info on the subject, yes I'm terrified of shots. So first the area, divide the buttock on four sections (you know make a cross in the middle) so you are going to inject on the upper outter corner, second step DO NOT ICE the area, if you do since PIO is an oil it will not get compleatly absorbed and it will form nots, which hurt like he**, then draw the medicine with a needle an then replace it for another, the first needle could be dulled from the bottle cap, and a dull needle is very painful; after you draw the dosage keep the syringe in your hands or bra for a few minutes, I saw in you tube this lady she keeps it inside a heating pad but rather than trying to warm up the vial is better to warm up the syringe with the med. inside., then inject in a 90deegres angle, and finally masage like crazy. Well good luck girl, and keep us posted.

Default Re: PIO Shots

They are not so bad, really. For me they only hurt after we've hit around the same area five or six times. It's more of a burning. The needle doesn't hurt.

Here's what I've learned, take it for what it's worth:
The first IVF I was totally nervous about the PIO. The nurse wouldn't even discuss it with us at our consult when she went over all the other shots, so of course that made me nervous! After my ER the nurse showed DH how and where to do the shots, how to find the spot, and talked him through the first one which we did right then. You draw up with a larger needle because it's thick and then switch to a smaller gauge to do the injection. The problem the first time was they gave us 1.5" needles and I'm small so they were too long! DH had to make sure to only put them in part way and that made it difficult for him. The second IVF they gave us 1" needles so he could put those in all the way and that was easier for him. The first IVF we did them with me laying on the bed, but the second IVF I stood up and took the weight off the side of the shot. That worked a lot better than laying down. You have to do the injection kind of slowly because it's thick. After DH does the shot he massages the area for several minutes and that helps. My nurse said you can also put a small heating pad set on low on the area for 10-15 minutes but check with your doctor first. Then I just massage whenever I think about it. I haven't had a PIO shot since March 20 and I still have knots in my hips. It goes with the territory. You may also go numb in the area for a short time - I promise that feeling will come back! I get little twinges now and then, like the nerves coming back.

It really is no big deal. You'll do great and ask anything on here, the girls are full of great information!

Massage and heat after the shot will help keep knots from forming. It's when you hit a knot that it hurts

Good luck!

I iced the area first, then shot myself up, then warmed the area with a heating pad.

Also, I would hold the syringe in my hand for a few minutes to warm up the PIO otherwise it's really hard to push out of the syringe.

Good luck!
