Default new to ivf

I just found out this past week that we are going to have to go the ivf route. Unless when dh does his sa a miracle has happened and we get to do iui. Which could happen but, the doctor isnt too hopeful. I am waiting in af to show so I can start day 3 labs and bcp. Anyway I had a question (if its not too personal)....what do you ladies intend to do with any frozen embies after your family is complete. That is the one thing I am figuring out for myself. I mean it may not even be a problem....I am just trying to sort everything out in my head before I start this cycle...Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the board!

Sorry you even have to join here, but you have found the best place for support as you go
through your journey!!

Around here nothing is a personal question, Left over embryos is a topic we have discussed before.

Some donate to research, not an option for alot of people but some do.

Some donate them to a couple struggling to become parents, but cant on their own. Melissa is actually going to do this.

Some discard them after they are sure their family is complete.

Its a personal decision.

I used all of mine up so it was never something I had to worry about. Cross that bridge when it comes.

I cant wait to get to know you better!!

I never had the luxury of having leftover embies. Until I used donated eggs. Then I had a ton of leftovers, all of which we transferred without success.

But, had we been successful, I had already decided that without a doubt I would donate those left to another couple that were TTC and needed them. I can't imagine anything better than giving someone a chance to build a new life.

Stacie has mentioned all of the current options, I think. But, I think, in the end, most of us use every single embryo we get anyway.

It's good to question all of the "what-ifs" before you get started. You will have many other questions too... like "How many do I transfer?" "Do I do a 3-day transfer or a 5-day transfer?" Stuff like that. Any question is okay around here. I hope we can help.

I have 15 eggs growing right now. We're TTC #1 so we will store any leftover to try again if it doesn't take the first time or for siblings down the road. If there are any left after that we'll likely donate for research. I did 3 IUIs due to MFI. Looking back, I wish we would have conserved our resources (time and money) and just went straight to IVF w/ ICSI. DH wasn't ready to be that aggressive 2 years ago, but is on board now. It takes what it takes I guess.

Hi,
It is a very personal decision but like Stacie said, we talk abou almost EVERYTHING here:-)
As for me, I will not donate or destroy. I am lucky (??), though that I am not that big a producer. Our plan is to transfer all our embabies, which I get a start on today b/c my FET is scheduled for 4 hours from now.
I think you're smart to think of this now. DH and I stared at each other dumbly in the RE's office when we had to make the decisions for the paperwork.

It is a good question - thanks for asking! My DH & I are about to embark on IVF #1, and we were wondering the same thing. DH is inclined to donate if there are leftovers and we are done, but I don't think I agree with him. I guess I'll have to wait and see how I feel if/when we get to that point.

It is a good question. We had to decide if we were going to donate before we started the process b/c if were going to donate then there was a lot more testing to be done due to the FDA's new requirements.

We chose not to donate.

Welcome! Everyone here is so helpful and nice and I'm so glad I found this place!

We only had to decide if we wanted to freeze any extras or not and of course we did. I've got 2 embryos on ice and I'm hoping to get more this cycle. We'll keep them frozen and hopefully get to use them for siblings. My clinic will only keep them for three years so if there are any left at that time we'll decide then.
