Okay...here goes. We are receiving embryos from a couple who had their cycle in 2004 before the FDA began regulating embryo donation. If you receive embryos that were frozen prior to 2005 it is a piece of cake!!! After 2005 there are a ton of regulations and both couples have to be RESCREENED ($$$$$) for infectious disease. We have to pay to have the embryos shipped and oou clinics will arrange for that. Also, we hired an attorney to draw up a contract releasing any rights (among other things). It only cost $350.00 for the attorney. If you are interested I can give you his name and number. My clinic charges $950.00 fro a FET. There will also be the cost of meds, ultrasound, and labwork but those costs are minimal. Let me know if you have any other questions for me.

I wonder why the donating couple had to be screened again, if they were screened before they started anything??? Or maybe that's my doc screened us for a whole bunch of stuff...

It is possible that you could have contracted something between the day of the infectious disease screening and the day of the retreival OR the HIV test may not have shown positive YET... Does that make sense?

To me it makes no sense that the donor couple has to be re screened, so what if they got something after the ER? I'm not saying is nothing, just that it doesn't affect the embryos.

I am trying to see both side of this and I guess I can, but it still seems a little odd.

It's an FDA regulation . . . very annoying and inconvenient but there to protect the recipient couple and the potential kids that could be conceived.

For example, if a person is exposed to HIV today, they could have virus in their blood but they may test negative for up to several months after exposure because the test checks for antibodies. Your body may take weeks or even months to mount an immune response and develop antibodies. Therefore, there is a risk that someone could be exposed to HIV this week, test negative next week and go on to cycle the week after that. After a few more weeks, if they were tested, their test could come back positive.

The point of rescreening the donating couple is to make sure that they didn't "seroconvert" after their initial STD screening.

Does that make sense?

Yea, kinda. I just keep forgetting that not everyone is faithful in their marriage!

When my RE's office called me back and said I didn't have HIV or hepatitis, I was like "of course not.."

$950 for a FET? now that's inexpensive! mine is $3,000 without meds. and i didn't know about the 2005 rule. mine would have to be rescreened and those tests are expensive!
