Default Re: How many IUI before IVF?

We were 31 and dealing with "unexplained infertility" and our RE would let us do up to 6 iui cycles. We ended up doing 4 iui cycles (1 with clomid, 2 with clomid/repronex and 1 with follistim). After the last one failed I was fed up and ready to do IVF, so it was my choice to jump to IVF, which I am glad I did because my first IVF cycle produced my son!

We only did 2, but our issue was motility. DH's swimmers just weren't swimming well, so we were told we had practically no chance of success. We had a lot of sperm each time, but the forward progression never made it above 2. We were told to have any shot, you need a 2+, and 3+ is better.

I think if you are getting a good number and your forward progression is good, trying multiple IUIs might be worthwhile if you are getting a good number of follicles, etc.

Now - you might need to check about your insurance. Around here, for those with IVF insurance coverage, they have to do 3 IUIs to get the insurance coverage. My doctor also said he wouldn't do more than 3, and in our case he would have completely skipped IUI (but my DH wasn't ready).

I agree with the others that it does depend on your diagnosis and if you are dealing with MF.

I think you need to talk with your RE about your odds with IUI and IVF.

We did two cycles of clomid/IUI and moved on to IVF. It also depends your comfort level and also how your insurance works.

I think we will finish the 3rd and then move to IVF...that you all for your input...DH swimmers are WAY above average...like 164 million per ml with 70% motility and 60% morph...Dr always raves about his sample hehe...Hopefully our first IVF will be it...if not this cycle...my PMS symptoms are pretty bad...so we will see!!!

Thanks again!

I did not do any because of my endo. My doc said IVF was a much better chance for us.

I hope this IUI works and you won't need to do IVF, but you have a good plan if need be.
