Icon5 Egg Retrieval-awake or asleep?

I wanted everyone's opionion on ER. Should I have local anesthesia or general anesthesia? I'm definitely leaning towards being knocked out . I already know I'll be very nervous since it's all a new experience for me.

It seems that ER is the hardest part of IVF. I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with me. I heard that there will probably be intense cramping afterwards, and that I'll be doing alot of sleeping . Do any of the medications (Doxycycline, Medrol, or Estrace) make you feel sick?

Hi Melissa,

I was "out" for both of my ER and they were just fine. I never had any kind of cramping or problems whatsoever. I don't even think I needed an advil afterwards. I did rest the remainder of the ER days, but it wasn't even that big of a deal, like I needed to or anything. I personally can't imagine being AWAKE for such a procedure (wasn't even an option offered to me), but the after effects were no big deal. HTH

All I had was mild sedatives to relax me during the ER.... and I fell asleep! I actually wanted to stay awake, but I remember talking to the nurse one moment and waking up as I was wheeled into recovery.

I had a lot of discomfort -- it felt like gassy pains. I remember asking the IVF nurses about the pains when I went back to have my transfer -- I was still uncomfortable. She told me that the discomfort was due to having 20 eggs removed.

I remember resting for the few days between the retrieval and the transfer. I think it's a combo of the procedure and all of the fertility drugs. I don't think I felt sick from the meds, either.

Good luck to you!!

Melissa,

I had no choice but to be awake. It's the only way my clinic does it. After 3 retrievals, if I had my choice I would get knocked out. One out of the three was so painful that my blood pressure actually started to drop and I got shocky. The other two were painful, but not like that. Drugs honey, drugs!!

I've done 3 fresh cycles and my RE insists you be totally out. With the first one I woke up with a lot of cramping until the pain killers kicked in. The second and third retrievals I had barely any cramping. With all of them the pain was gone by the time I got home.

Go totally out. It's like a really nice nap. The ET usually doesn't take more that 15 minutes.

Babydust!
