Hello ladies,

Here's my situatuion in a nut shell. Back in 2006 when I had u/s to check for follicles, the tech would always see something; she thought it was a polyp. However, only certain times of the month was it really observable and other times it was not observable. So, after 6 months of seeing this "thing" on and off, they decided to do a saline sonograph. What they saw then was something that was outside of the uterus. They weren't concerned and kept me going with fertility treatments.

So, DH and I have decided to do IUIs once again (still ttc #1), and last month the tech saw this "thing" again. I got another saline sonograph done the other day, and it turns out that I have a fibroid and it has grown into my uterus. It measured about 1 cm. The doc wants it out as do I.

My question for you is, with all of your reading and knowledge about fibroids, do you think that the fibroid (even 2 years ago, small and slowly growing) could be the cause of my infertility? I've read that fibroids may produce proteins that do not allow embryos to implant.

I'm having a myectomy (sp?) on May 15th.

Did you all get pregnant afterwards? I've read that scarring could cause implatation. How rare is that?

Thanks for reading!

Sorry....the second to last sentence should have read "I've read that scarring from the surgery can cause infertility."

hi and welcome to the board.

Fibroids in the uterine wall can mis-shape the uterus enough to hinder implantation. 1cm is awfully small- I've had a couple 2cm ones with all my pregnancies. So for so good. I also had a myomectomy- I have 6 large fibroids- we're talking like an orange, golf ball, etc. That surgery left scar tissue in my uterus but thankfully it was removed during my hysteroscopy (my 2nd fibroid surgery). I got pregnant with my first child 6 months later...naturally.

Most people I know do get pregnant after they remove their fibroids- I highly reccommend it- especially if they are big and is mis-shapping the uterus. Plus they can grow -like yours seems to be doing and really get in the way. They could very well be ther reason for your infertilty. They were why it took me 5 years to get pregnant. Now 3 children later I am still very glad I had the surgery- mine was very serious- 2 months bed-rest and 10 months wait to ttc again. I had my hysteroscopy to remove inner fibroids a year later.

Good luck May 15th- keep us posted.

Thanks Sheryl. I think I must be getting the hysteroscopy done; I'll know for sure when I see my doctor next week. I'll definitely keep you posted!

I am new to this site and have to say thanks to all for all your helpful information! This is the first site I have found where everyone is so straight forward and informative! I just found out I have one fibroid that is a little bit larger than 5cm and there may be more but the doc couldn't tell because he thought this one might be blocking his view during the ultrasound. He has scheduled me for a laproscopic myomectomy at the end of this month. He said it would be 2 to 3 weeks of recovery time depending on whether he has to make a small incision right above my pelvic line in order to suture the uterus shut. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the fibroid is inside my uterus and is causing displacement of the lining as well as enlarging of my uterus. Can I expect to recover this quickly? What else can I expect after the surgery? My doc says I will have to have a c-section if I get pregnant in the future. Is that true? I do not have any children yet, but am hoping that after the surgery I will be able to get pregnant. I have had one miscarriage about 7 years ago and am wondering if this fibroid may have been part of the reason. Any advice to someone fixing to go in for this procedure? I am very nervous!

It is understandable to be nervous. I was a wreck before my surgeries. Just remember you are doing this for your future pregnancy. That is what kept me going through my 5 yr struggle. Now I have 3 little angels and couldn't be happier.

I replied to your other post- let me know if you have any questions. I am here for you.

I am having a myomectomy next month and this will be my first major surgery. I have 2 children 6 and 4 and they came with no problem. Now I have a fibriod the size of an orange. My doctor advised my to have a myo because of my age.(32) My mother had the same thing when she was my age and she never had the opinion of a myo. She had a hysto, 15 years ago and she told me to have the hysto and be done with it. I am in the middle only because I have so much pain and the otc drugs are not working anymore soooooooooooo, I am in alot of pain for the most part if the month and it is becoming very old and I am tired of not have the energy or trying to be very careful so that I would get up with a mess ( you on what I mean). I know that this is my decision but I would like to have so feed back from someone who has been through this.. Help

Hi~
I think the hysterectomy is way more serious of a surgery. I'd opt for the Myomectomy at such a young age of 32. I know removing an orange size fibroid will give you much relief in the long run. Plus you can still have children if you decide to.
Check back with us after the surgery (or before) and let us know how you are doing.
