Icon9 New - with questions - please help!

Hi,
I'm fairly new here - lurked a few times recently. I am 36, with 1 son, 19 months. When I was pg with him, I had some bleeding early on & at that tiime, they discovered that I had a fibroid(or cluster of them - no one was ever able to tell for sure) that was about 4cm. As my pregnancy progressed, it grew to about 8.5cm. My son was born 1 week early, normal delivery. Most of the u/s techs believed the fibroid(s) was on the outside of my uterus, but even now, w/ an MRI, they only "think" its on the outside. Now, I'm ready to start ttc-ing again & thru an MRI, the fibroid looks to be about 9-10cm, is pushing against my ovary & bladder & displacing my uterus a little to the left side. After discussion w/ my doctor, she seems to think it would be better to wait to remove it until after I finish havinig kids & that since it didnt affect my pregnancy the last tiime, it should be ok this time. But the fibroid was a lot smaller last time & doubled in size during my pregnancy & I'm afraid it will grow even more the next pregnancy & actually cause problems, esp if its already pushing against the organs in my abdomen. I dont want to risk ruining my uterus for future pregnancies, but at the same time I dont want to risk a miscarriage or premature delivery - or risking my own health. What do others on this board think about the risks for/against removal & what are my options for removal & the quickest turn around time for when I can start ttc-ing if i do remove the fibroid 1st? Please help - I dont know what would be best...
Thanks,
Cortney

Hi and welcome to the board.

Sounds like your fibroid will only continue to grow as you ttc and through another pregnancy. I had many fibroids on the outside of my uterus.- removed them via myomectomy. Although your fibroids is not inside the uterus it still can affect fertility by distorting the shape of the uterus- plus it causes problems with other organs it touches and pushes. I had 2 fibroid surgeries prior to getting pg the first time. My OB felt it was best to remove them first- instead of waiting too long. Besides, they were totally making me infertile.

The decision is yours...but I would get another opinion and seriously discuss the benefits of surgery now. I wish you the best of luck!!! Please keep in touch and let me know what you decide to do.

p.s. my son is 19 months too!

I noticed! He's 2 days younger than my son - 12/27! Aiden was one of the names we considered - what a cutie!! We named our son Rowan..
Do you think I would have to have a myomectomy, or would they be able to do a laproscopy? I've heard that those are much easier to recover from. I'm just really afraid I'd have to be on bed rest for so long & then have to wait for almost another year to start ttc-ing. I'm getting too old as it is.. Under what conditions can you get a laproscopy vs having to have the myomectomy?

How sweet they are the same age. Rowan is a nice name too.

I had to have the myomectomy because my firboids were HUGE. Yours is 10 cm which isn't huge- but isn't tiny either. You may have the option to go the laproscopy route- I am not sure.

I had 2 months bed rest and had to wait many months to ttc again...but I have really really large ones and there were 5 of them. I know someone that had less and her recovery was much shorter than mine. So your may not be that long afterall. Talk to your doc and find out all the information. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
