Hysteroscopic Myomectomy/Resection

Just thought I'd start a thread here for anyone who has been through this procedure or will be having this done. Which includes me.
I had my consult with a specialist today. After looking at the pictures of my hysteroscopy that my RE did and doing an internal exam, he decided that my fibroid MIGHT be about 3 cm, but probably not any bigger.
On Monday, I have an u/s so that he can determine the exact size and placement and decide which tools would be appropriate for the procedure. I am scheduled for my hysteroscopic myo on August 2.
The doctor said that I will have a follow-up exam 4 weeks later to make sure everything looks good. If it does, I'll have to wait about 2 more months before I can TTC. If the fibroid hasn't been completely removed, I will need a second procedure (sometimes when the fibroid is deep into the wall, they like to do it in two procedures if you're trying to preserve fertility). The doc doesn't think my fibroid is deep into the wall, but I suppose he'll know more on Monday.
So...anyone who has any experiences to share on this procedure would be most welcome to post. Also, anyone with advice on how to NOT make yourself crazy during the recovery period, I'd welcome the suggestions! I could still be pregnant by Christmas, but because we must go the IUI route, maybe Valentine's Day is more reasonable.
And just a story to share that the doc told me. He had a patient come in after 2 failed IVF cycles...and she had fibroids inside her uterus. He removed them, and she was pregnant well before the 3 month waiting period. I can't imagine how a doctor would let a woman go through all that expensive treatment without running any tests. I'd be furious!

Is the fibroid on the outer wall or inside the uterus??
I got pg 6 months after my last fibroid surgery. I think removal is a good thing!
I had a 2 month bed rest after my myomectomy and had to wait 10 months to ttc. The bed rest was ok- I watched a lot of tv and read books. It was a nice break from work. I did get a little nuts cause I couldn't clean the house etc. My DH got a cleaning service to come in at the end and I felt good about that. Not ttcing for 10 months was ok....It went quickly and I kept myself busy with my career at the time.
Mine is inside the uterine cavity, which is why I will never be able to get pregnant with it still in there...it acts like a natural IUD. Hopefully they don't find any other fibroids hanging out inside my wall or on the outside when I have my u/s...I don't want to go through a major surgery!

Inside is better...easier to get. Mine were embedded in the outer wall- that is why I had to wait so long to ttc- if I got pregnant my uterus wouldn't be strong enough to accomodate the growth of the baby. I had a hysterscopy to remove an inside fibroid a year later and was able to ttc after a few months- got pg 6 month after.
I know you are going in the right direction. I bet you'll be announcing that bfp soon.
Tomorrow is my surgery. I'm scheduled for 2pm, so hopefully the doctor doesn't run too late with his other surgeries. I hate waiting! I think I'm in pretty good hands, this doc has been around the block! My fibroid is not quite 3 cm and is mostly intracavitary (very little appears to be in the wall), so he thinks he should be able to get it completely out with one procedure.
Tomorrow will begin the 3 month countdown to when I can TTC!

Okay...so Monday I had a transvaginal ultrasound. I don't know if you've ever had one of those, but lets just say that it's like having sex, complete with condom, WITHOUT having any fun. The doc found that my fibroid was less than 3 cm in diameter yet took up half of my uterine cavity. He saw no evidence of any other fibroids, and this one did not appear to be deep in the wall. He scheduled me for a "hysteroscope biopsy, resection, and curettage."
Yesterday, six hours before surgery, I had to insert a Cytotec pill up near my cervix. As it turns out, you can use that pill to cure ulcers or induce an abortion. So imagine trying to abort a baby that doesn't exist...blood and cramping. Yippee.
We go to the hospital, get to wait in a private room and watch tv while they draw blood and have me change clothes. Actually, it was quite comfortable...I wish all hospitals were like that. They took me into the surgery holding room around 2:15 and wheeled me into surgery right before 3. The next time I opened my eyes, it was 4:15. The doc came and talked to me, but I was still a bit slow in understanding anything.
After a short time, I was moved into the outpatient recovery area, where I again had a private room. I was there until about 6pm.
According to DH, who talked to the doctor, this is what happened: Because the cytotec caused so much bleeding, the first thing the doc did was suck out all the blood. WELL...his tools must have sucked so well, because that fibroid was GONE. It must have been barely attached and let go on its own, because he never saw the thing. He was so disappointed, DH said, because he never even got to take a "before" picture. The doc did not have to scrape my lining because it was already so clean and because he didn't even have to actually perform the surgery, my recovery time will be quite short. The doc told DH that I SHOULD come in for a 4-week evaluation just to make sure I'm doing fine, but that I don't HAVE to. And the best part? He said that after that appointment, there is no reason we can't go ahead with our baby plans. I don't have to wait after all (unless my other doc wants to).
The anesthesia made me throw up, peeing burns a little, and the tube down my throat has made it raw, but I have no bleeding or cramping. I'm feeling pretty darned good!

To July Butterfly/Pamela,
Hope you are recovering well. I had a myomectomy last week Tuesday the 15th of August and returned home on Friday from hospital. About 10 fibroids were removed through open surgery, the largest was about 4 inches. The fibroids were discovered when I had an ectopic pregnancy last month. I am generally feeling ok - just very tired.
I dont have too much pain - just discomfort like mild period pain. I have to stay at home for about 6 weeks to recover. I am 28 , have no kids yet and would like to ttc soon. I am already going crazy at staying at home with so many restrictions on the activities especially considering that I don't much have much pain. How did you manage?
I had an 8 week recovery time and pretty much laid around and watched HGTV. Got hooked on design shows and wanted to totally redesign our house by the end. I read alot and sat at the computer and emailed all my co-workers and friends. I talked on the phone too. I didn't over-extended at all. It is too dangerous to do things after a major surgery like that. Just take the time to pamper yourself.
I had to wait 10 months to ttc.... how long are you supposed to wait?
Doctor said I might have to wait 3 months before ttc, but I am seeing him tomorrow for the first time since leaving hospital on Friday,so I will confirm. Have realised that I am being too impatient and have to find new projects for myself- am worried that I will get obsessed with the thoughts of having a baby. I can't help watching shows on baby care but it sometimes makes me sad since it makes me think of my ectopic pregnancy. So today I am refocussing and I plan to do some serious pampering! Thanks for the advice : )
Try to keep away from TLC's baby story and all those baby shows. Focus on something else- anything else. Until 3 months from now.
I was OBSESSED with getting pg the 5 years we tried. It consumed my life. When I got pg with Aidan I had given up 100%. I was told I'd never have children of my own (after all the fibroids I found out I had low FSH- which could be low eggs or bad eggs) But got pg the next month after living my life and not thinking of babies at all.
I had my follow-up hysteroscopy today. I have minimal adhesion (nothing removed), but the doc doesn't really think it's ahesions...he thinks the hysteroscope rubbed me funny. I have the green light to TTC with my next cycle.
Pathology revealed that I did NOT have a fibroid. It was an adenomyoma. Basically, adenomyosis is endometriosis within the uterus. In most cases, it hangs out in the wall and doesn't cause problems with fertility, although it may cause irregular bleeding. Sometimes, tissue grows in one area and becomes impossible to tell from a fibroid until pathology comes through. This is called "focal adenomyoma" and is typically resected like a fibroid because it does cause fertility problems.
At any rate, I'm counting down the days!
Sharon, because I had a hysteroscopic resection, I was back to normal activity the next day. I had a little cramping, but nothing more. The hardest part of it all is being told you have to wait X amount of time before you can move forward. Even if I don't get pregnant right away, at least now I will be making progress. Keeping your brain busy helps quite a bit, but since you are limited in activity, it will be harder to find things to do. Reading has helped me a lot this summer (as did 150 mg of Wellbutrin!), and I was also able to get away for a week. How about learning to knit or cross-stitch? That's time consuming! Hang in there...your time will be up before you know it!
