Default PTU during pregnancy?

Hi all. I'm hyperthyroid and have been on methemazole (sp?) for about a 1 year. We had a surprise pregnancy last month which ended w/ a miscarriage. The baby did make us realize that we do want one more child (we have three--5 yrs, 3 yrs, 2 yrs).

OB said to have one normal cycle and then he is good w/ us TTC.

Had endo appt. today. My numbers are good. All w/in normal range, but they are worried if they take me off that my numbers will plunge. They have switched me over to PTU. I will just be taking 50 mg/once a day. I go back in one month for follow up blood work.

They told me today that PTU is very safe for me to take during pregnancy. They said that methemazole (sp?) has caused problems w/ babies' fingernails (I'm sure other things too...) and that PTU is the drug of choice during pregnancy. But she told me if I read stuff about taking PTU during pregnancy that I'd freak out. I'd just like to hear from some real-world people who took PTU during pregnancy. Any stories you can share w/ me? Hopefully happy, healthy baby stories.

Hi Carrie

Sorry to hear of your m/c. I hope you are healing well emotionally and physically.

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in Dec 05. I was on Methimozole up Dec 05 - May 06. Then switched to PTU because I wanted to start ttcing. By then, I my levels were in normal ranges. I was able to get pregnant that August and have just recently given birth to my daughter. She not quite a week old yet. I was able to stop PTU by my first trimester and my levels were checked periodically throughout the pregnancy. They stayed in the normal ranges despite not being on meds. I am due to have my levels checked now that I am postpartum. My daughter is totally healthy.

I would advise taking a few months of observation on the PTU to see what dosage will keep you in your already achieved normal ranges.

Let me know how things are going. Feel free to PM me as I don't always frequent these boards regularly as they can be slow.

I know this is old and I am sorry to give you the news that my endo told me (who is the head of department at the U of MN). I was on PTU and was told NOT to conceive under ANY circumstances on PTU. I ended up having a total thyroidectomy in March 2007 and that is when hubby and I were give tne "okay" to TTC by my endocronologist. I was told that taking PTU while pregnant can cause miscarriage and throid problems w/ baby because medication crosses the placenta. I would get a second opinion before TTC while on PTU.
