I am not currently ttc but will be in about a year or less. I have a daughter who is almost 10 months old and I just found out that I have hypothyroid, which was shocking to me because I have lost weight (due to breastfeeding) and could not put a lb back on for the life of me. My tsh came back at 9.5 and my doctor prescribed 25mg of Synthyroid for me to start tomorrow morning. My biggest symptoms were shortness of breath, major fatigue, moodiness, and brain fog..are these typical symptoms? I also chart to prevent right now and I did ovulate 11 days ago, which I guess is weird considedering how out of whack my thyroid is. Has anyone had luck feeling better soon after taking meds? Thanks!!

I have been treated for hypothyroidism for 6 years. When my TSH gets high I usually experience weight gain, the mental fog, and extreme fatigue. It took about a month to start feeling better although it takes about 3-4 months to feel the total effect. The weight gain does not go away and I have to work hard to maintain weight. You are lucky not to have gained weight. I always feel better when my TSH is 0.5-1. My endocrinologist likes to see TSH levels of 1-2 when TTC and pregnant. Hope this was helpful.
Thanks for replying! After being on the medicine for only 6 days I really felt an improvement. For the first time in a long time my mind felt "clear" and not "foggy". I am really looking forward to getting rid of the fatigue next!

We are trying to conceive this month. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid a couple months after our son was born. I have been on 75 mcg of Levothyroxine since October. We are really hoping that this will not affect being able to conceive or safely carry a baby to term. I am really glad to be on the medication though. My husband thought that I was losing my mind before I started on medication! I hope to talk to anyone in this same position.

We aren't ttc yet but my doctor said that once my thyroid is controlled it shouldn't be a problem. Do you know if you thyroid levels are normal? If so, I would think you would be able to conceive w/o a problem. Before I knew my thyroid was low, I thought I was losing my mind, too! I was just put on the lowest dose, 25mcg of Synthroid so far, but in 3 weeks I get another blood draw to see if I need more. I feel better, but still a little foggy and moody here and there. What were your symptoms?

I've been treated for hypothyroidism for about 5 years. My main sxs was feeling sad and getting upset easily. When I was dxs my tsh was 19.5. I was suspicious of my thyroid since 8-9 months earlier I had a parathyroid nodule removed which took a tiny piece of my thyroid. My pcp said that the tsh is one test she always runs when someone complains of depression.
I keep it around 1 now and feel best at that level. I can tell when it starts to creep up around 3 or 4. Brain fog is the biggest sign for me.
My tsh fluctuates often. I think it's seasonal. I just went hyper a month ago as we changed my meds before my last ivf cycle since I was hypo and needed a change asap.
When I go hyper is when I feel shortness of breath. This last time I felt more of an overwhelming feeling such as I have so much to do, but I can't decide where to start. I also get tired in the evenings (swinging hyper) since I was so energetic in the daytime.
I think your sxs are typical. I also can get intolerance to cold. I seem to have that now so I'm not sure what's up with that. I usually feel a lot better quickly once my meds are changed.

Mine does as well. I prefer 1.

Thanks! I really am not sure how long I have been hypo..I am assuming that during my pregnancy my thyroid was fine because I know they test that..although I did have preterm labor which I've heard can be a sign of being hypo. After I had the baby I thought I was just tired from being up a few times each night and breastfeeding. I assumed the brain fog was part of being so tired. Then last month I noticed I was getting really moody and am not normally like that at all, so I knew something was up, I thought it was hormonal. I am so glad I found out because I already feel better though I know my levels are still not low enough, I still get "foggy" throughout the day but before it was all day and way worse. My ob/gyn tested my tsh last Thursday but I don't expect the numbers to have changed much as I had only been on the synthroid for like 8 days at that point. My regular doctor wants to see me again in 3 weeks to retest my levels and see if I need a higher dosage. Its nice that this board is here so I know I am not alone in how I was feeling..I was starting to think it was just me and maybe I was depressed or something!

My thyroid levels are normal now. My dr put me on the correct dose of medication on the first try. I actually went to the dr because my cholesterol was high when my husband and I did our medical exams for life insurance. His cholesterol came back normal, and I eat better then he does! I went to the dr to find out what was going on with the cholesterol and he tested my TSH levels. Once the nurse called me with the results, I did some research and a lot of things going on made more sense to me. I had been in a real brain fog, I had a lot of trouble losing any weight after I had Kaden. I had started getting cold more often - which was really unusual and I was tired. I attributed being tired to having three small children. Once I got on the medication though everything stabilized and went back to normal. I wish that I had found this board right after I was diagnosed though. I went through a slight depression because I may have to take medication for the rest of my life. Now it is not an issue at all, but when it happened, it seemed like it was a huge thing.
We are actively TTC this month, and I am hoping that all goes well and we get a BFP! Hope all is going well with all of you.

I just got some lab results from my gyn/ob..he was testing everything because I had some irregular cycles and he included a tsh in the tests even though I had just started synthroid like 10 days earlier..anyway, the tsh level dropped some, it went from 9.5 to 6.24, obviosly not great, but at least I am responding to the meds already! I know that the meds need to be upped because I still have the brain fog somewhat and I am still cold easily, but I go in to the doctor who is treating my hypo (not my ob/gyn) on Friday so I'll see what he says..
Oh, and when you say your levels are now normal, what is that? Under 2?

Normal in most labs is considered under 3, I believe. Normal many years ago used to be under 5. It's changed since I've been treated so 3 something is normal.
My endo likes it around 1 for ttc and I feel best at that. I'm glad it's working for you!!

Lots of interesting information.
Last month, I was feeling so exhausted. IT was horrible. Moody, tired, lack of enthusiasm. People told me that maybe I was depressed, but seriously, I didnt think that was the case. Also, my FHS was high-ish at 10.5. When I got my TSH done, it was 3.8. The lab considers normal .38-5.5. IT did state however that over 3.5 is considered pre-clinical hypothyroidism.
I am going for a tubal reversal July19th. I suppose I should try to get on medication before ttc? (when I jsut had my FSH retested, it was 7.6, and my thyroid had dropped to 3.0 so it does seem to be related)
IS thyroid medication safe for pregnancy? (stupid question I bet, but I really dont know)

My endo says synthroid is safe to take during pregnancy and told me I must take it throughout pregnancy. My endo has been keeping my TSH at 0.5 while TTC and during pregnancy. I must say this level is the best I have felt. I do not feel all that well with my TSH above 3.5.
The thyroid gland controls a lot of your body especially growth. Infertility is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. If by some weird chance you get pregnant with an underactive thyroid, you run the risk of your baby having growth and mental retardation, heart defects,etc...Your level of 3.0 is not that high, but if TTC my endo says to keep TSH 1-2. I would check with your doctor. Hope this was helpful.
Thank you, yes.. it was. The doctor doing my tubal reversal is a reproductive endocrinologist, I wont be seeing him again until my post-op, but I will look into getting treated. It is 3.0 now, but has been as high as 4. It seems to fluctuate all on its own. In canada, normal is considered up to 5, but it did say on the lab result that anything over 3.2 is considered subclinical hypothyroid and needs to be monitored as it will most likely become higher over time.
