Default Loosing a baby to HYPOTHYROIDISM.

Hi Ladies, This may turn out to be a long message so bear with me.

I delivered twin girls on 25/5/01, both was diagnosed with Underactive Thyroid and given thyroxine as a daily med. There was no previous history of this in any of our families before now and had the doctors and specialists baffled that both of them had it but are NON IDENTICAL TWINS.
The chances of this are very rare, but still it has happened.

Then in July last year my sister gave birth to her son and he was diagnosed with Underactive Thyroid and also given medication. So the specialist decided to test my sister and she was diagnosed and given Thyroxine.

Then in Nov last year i found out i was expecting again, thrilled to bits as he was planned.
When i went to book in at my first antenatal i gave all the history of the Underactive Thyroid and she said they would test the baby as soon as it was born, never mentioned about testing me but i thought this was ok as i had never been tested before.
Then at 12 weeks antenatal i mentioned that the twins thyroxine intake had been put up , my doc asked me if i had a TFT done and i said NO.
She looked a little worried and told me i was to have one now.
4 Days later i got a phone call asking me to go and visit my doc, the results had come back and i also had Underactive thyroid..........i started taking thyroxine right away, but then 4 weeks later at my antenatal i found out my baby's heart had stopped beating.
I delivered my son and found that the cord was tied around his right leg. They said this was probably the cause of his death but i started to look on the net for info on hypothyroidism in pregnancy and found that if left untreated within the first trimeseter i was at 4 times grater risk of loosing the baby after 12 weeks.
Has anyone ever heard this before ?

I am having my tft levels checked regularly now as i am ttc again.

Thanx for listening.

Cathrine, I lost two babies due to my over-active thyroid (hyperthyroid) and through researching, I have read some things on a hypothyroid, as well. Turns out that a hypothyroid and hyperthyroid both increase the risk of m/c greatly. I'm not sure about hypothyroid, but I read that with my condition, if I didn't lose the babies, they were at a very high risk to have severe birth defects. I have stickied a post of info above that I would recommend you reading through. I'm so livid for both of us because our drs didn't test our thyroids when we fist were pg! Especially for you, you told them your history and your families history! I don't see how the cord around your baby's leg would have caused him to die, that doesn't make much sense to me. My almost 3yr old was born with his cord wrapped around his neck very tightly twice and he survived. Granted, it was a very scary delivery and he was taking away from me, but he lived.

I hope your levels are getting under control and you go on to have a healthy, happy baby very soon! Both of us for that matter!

Wow, Cath.

I have been hypo since receiving RAI back in Sept of '98.
And been on Levoxyl ever since (currently 200mcg). When I found out that I was pregnant, I was somewhat worried about the situation, especially because this was not planned! Before becoming pg I had my TSH checked every 4-6 months and now they are checking me every 30 days. Last check was 1.08, so I think I am good.

My heart goes out to you all who have been struggling with thyroid issues & especially to those who have lost a child. I too am dealing with hypothyroidism. I was dx 6 years ago & from what my Dr told me there was no concerns about pregnancy & the thyroid issue. I was actually TTC#2 & having annovulatory cycles & my Dr checked my hormones. This is when he found my thyroid levels off & started me on levethyroxine. I have 3 beautiful DDs & up until now have never worried about them having the same problem except maybe later in life. Maybe I should have them all tested for thyroid problems? With the reading I have done if your thyroid is "untreated" you are at higher risk of m/c but what about if your thyroid is under control? It looks like I may need to get some more info.

I too have Hypo and think it was the cause of my back to back losses. I actually didn't get DX until my DD was 6 months old... but I already had low progesterone and had to take it after my 2nd MC and from the time I conceived my DD till I was 13 wks.
I really think if it wasn't for the prog I would have lost her too.

I also think it should be a MANDATORY test to be included the first time and you get a BFP++next should be the Thyroid test.

I guess it will take someone doing a article for the New England Journal of Medicine or some continuing ED class for the Dr's to start doing it on a routine basis.
So sad to think how many of us are losing babies every day due to thyroid disease.
