Hypothyroid ONLY when pregnant?
This is a discussion on Hypothyroid ONLY when pregnant? within the Thyroid Problems forums, part of the Trying to Conceive - Health issues category; Anyone have or know someone who has had hypothyroidism only with pregnancy, when it was normal without?
Thanks!...
Kerri! I dont' have an answer but I did find this paragraph for you. The last sentence states that pg may show a developing problem with your thyroid.
Quote:
Pregnancy. Thyroiditis is especially common in the post partum period (it is also sometimes confused with postpartum depression) and may require thyroid hormone adjustments. It is also important to note that hypothyroidism (and hyperthyroidism) can sometimes cause unexplained infertility or miscarriages particularly early in pregnancy. Therefore, thyroid function tests are often a routine part of evaluating a patient who may have problems with pregnancy. In addition, during pregnancy, the requirements for thyroid hormone may increase, and should be monitored closely in the first and second trimester. Although some forms of thyroid disease may actually improve during pregnancy, pregnancy is also often associated with the development of benign thyroid disease.
I too found some info. on pregnancy induced hypothyroidism, but not a lot of treatment info. I hear of people with thyroid problems going into pregnancy, or thyroid problems being first diagnosed while pregnant, but never a normal thyroid turning abnormal with pregnancy, and then going back to normal after pregnancy. Just wondering if there is anyone out there with some experience with this.
Okay, I have heard/read that a woman can be hyperthyroid only when she is pg because her body isn't handling the hCG correctly, but I haven't read about that being the case with hypothyroid. However, I've obviously read a lot more on hyperthyroid because that's whta I have.
Kerri, do you mind me asking why this has come up?
I'm asking because I had a TSH done while I was pregnant and it was elevated. They got the results back and wanted to do a T4 due to the abnormal results. They drew the T4 (after I miscarried) and it was normal. Yesterday I saw my doc and she asked me if I had any thyroid sx like palpitations. I said OMG yes! When I was pregnant these last 2 times (never happened with Luke) I had strong ones, frequently throughout the day. When I miscarried they slowly went away. After I left I got to thinking and wondered if my thyroid is normal when not pregnant, but hypo (hence the high TSH) when pregnant. Unfortunately she isn't in again until Fri. I want to suggest having another TSH done while not pregnant to see what it's like.
I have a family history of Hypo. It started with my twins being born with it in 01. I was tested and it was fine.
Then in 04 my nephew was born with it and my sister was tested and she has it.
I got pg in Nov 04 and was tested at 12 weeks to discover i had become hypo whilst being pg. Unfortunatly my baby boy died 4 weeks later at 16 weeks. I have been tested again since i had my labour and i am still hypo and currently ttc again.
I dont know if this actually fits in with what your trying to find out.
Big hugs
Thank you so much for your help, Catherine. I'm so sorry to hear about your little angel. I wish you the very best of luck and that you get your little baby soon.
This is a really old thread but I'll reply anyway, I had a normal thyroid before getting pregnant and during the last two months of my pregnancy I did get hypothyroidism. I started gaining weight rapidly and was more exhausted than I ought to have been at 7 months along. By rapidly I mean, I had only gained about 15 lbs up to the 7th month then suddenly gained about 3-5 lbs per week! I was so lethargic that I couldn't get out of bed too long for being just pooped! I was tested several times to monitor things after that diagnosis until his birth and did take synthroid. After my son was born I was told to stop taking it at the hospital. At my two week post partum appt I was tested again and it was fine, again at my 6 week post partum I was also fine. So thats my story.
hi i just stumbled onto this board tonight. i was hypo with my 2nd pg...1st pg was m/c at 11-12wks, 2nd was hypo on some tests and others fine but i gained 70lbs from 5months to term and 3rd pg was fine with normal gain. i've been to several endercronologists but they have no clue what happened. they say it was thyroid storms. and now i have too much of my adrenal gland showing up.
