Default Are you overweight?

Well i know some of you may not be comfortable sharing your weight! But i was wondering according to BMI charts are you overweight? Because i know there is a big link between weight and PCOS! I was about 60 lbs overweight up until May this year but i have lost 20 lbs and am still considered to be 40 lbs overweight! UGH!
I hate being overweight and have tried sooo hard to lost weight since having my son 16 months ago, it is like pulling teeth. Before i had my son i could lose weight very easily but now man oh man!
So what is your experience with weight?

Before having my son I was skinny, but since having my son up until recently I was considered overweight based on the BMI. I've since lost about 20 pounds and am now considered in the "normal" range, but still have about 20 more pounds to lose before I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

I noticed before I was pregnant I had a hard time gaining weight and now I have a hard time losing it.

Yes, I've struggled with weight since I was a teenager. Even when I'm at my thinnest, I'm always at the upper range of normal for my weight. I am definitely over the normal range for my BMI, but usually just run 10-20 lbs over the top end of normal (although I put on about 25 lbs ttc, and that put me more like 35 lbs over normal for me). I find it quite difficult to lose weight (even when strictly following weight watchers or other diets) and I do believe it is the PCOS. What I did discover when I was losing weight for my wedding, I can lose weight easily on a diet like South Beach (I think it is similar to the carbohydrate addicts diet). It really makes sense because people with PCOS, even if they don't show up with an elevated insulin level, supposedly do not process insulin normally, so carbs/sugars would likely pose some issues for the body, too. On South Beach, I really didn't have to put much effort into weight loss while I ate lean proteins and avoided sugar and simple carbs. I did eat tons of veggies, limited fruit intake to the lower sugar fruits (avoided all fruit the first 2 weeks), ate plenty of complex carbs like beans and lentils, and the weight just poured off of me, even though I was eating tons of food. I've never had that before. Unfortunately, I really like carbs, so I sometimes find it difficult to start the diet, but once I do it, it is totally worth it!

I am over weight with PCOS. I have ALOT more to lose (have lost 98 pounds so far) but my Dr. told me that even losing just 10% of your total body weight would probably be enough to shock your body into functioning properly with regards to reproduction or at least get me closer. I have been doing Weight Watchers for almost a year now and am a strict non-diet person and it's easy and very liveable for me. Good luck and lots of baby dust to all of you!

I've ALWAYS struggled with weight even as a child, never not been on a diet it seems! Hard time losing EASY time gaining. I do think it is the PCOS, but my weight has been much more stable on metformin, I dont gain as easily, and have had a n easier time maintaining.

I've always had trouble with it too, for as long as I can remember, but am about to start the South Beach. I don't want to do it, but if I have to diet to have a child, I will. I am glad you had some good words about that Tkeys, because the diet sounds really hard to me! I agree with Manda totally. My doctor, and my sister, suggested it for PCOS + pregnancy and said that just losing twenty or so pounds would do the trick for the ovaries even though I am way over what my BMI should be. My doctor says it is not really about being at or near your BMI with PCOS and pregnancy, its about getting "close to it" and eating right with limited sugar and carbs. My sister has PCOS and is very overweight, and she just lost maybe thirty pounds and was pregnant the next month- so I am thinking there is maybe hope for me! It is just the thought of not eating bread and sugar for two weeks that is disturbing to me. I love pizza and italian food and bread is a major highlight of my dinner, so it is going to be really rough on me. I am thinking that with the south beach diet and clomid combined, I am going to be hell on earth with my moods!! The things we go through to have a child...

Hi All,

I thought I would share my story with you all as I have been in your shoes.

I was pretty much considered morbidly obese on the BMI scale when I was diagnosed with PCOS in 09/06. I was 248 pounds at 5'2". My cycles were completely screwy - I could go 3-4 months without a period - and I wasn't ovulating on some cycles. Thanks to Progesterone, Metformin and Clomid I am now the mom of that beautiful baby girl in my siggy.

I somehow managed to only gain 15lbs during pregnancy, lost it all plus 20lbs more in the month after she was born, and then ballooned up to 263lbs by the time she was 6mo old. As of 7 months post-partum, I still did not have my period back. In Feb. of this year, desperate, I started dieting - low carb, of course - and so far I have lost 85 pounds. I'm still overweight by about 40lbs, but dramatically improved for sure.

Why am I telling you this? Because within 2 months of starting the diet, my period returned and for the past 4 months I have had a 33-day cycle like clockwork. I have never had such a normal cycle. And I am not on any meds for PCOS. So now I wonder....does the PCOS cause weight gain? Or vice versa?

So bravo to you all for trying to lose the weight - believe me, as I struggle every day to stay on plan, I KNOW what you are going through and I wish us all success!! I hope and pray that it will produce the same results for you that it did for me and that you will each be blessed with the pregnancy you desire.

to you all!

And I'd like to hear from other women - if they are out there - that have lost weight and returned to normal ovulation cycles. I'm curious.
