Started Metformin, Now Everything Smells Funny

Hello ladies, I'm new to the PCOS board (just diagnosed last week) but I've been on TTC #1 and TTC 20 Something for almost two years now. I started 500 mg of Metformin on Sunday and have been experiencing the typical side effects (feel like I will vomit 24/7 and occasional 'potty problems' after eating something with fat in it), but I've also noticed that since taking the medication everything smells funny. It's not so much that it smells bad as that the smell is stronger and a lot of things make me feel like I'll barf. Cleaning the garbage disposal this morning, seeing a can of pickled pigs feet at the grocery store, even brushing my teeth last night almost made me barf. I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed that their sense of smell and taste is hightened and if they become nauseated by things that never bothered them before. Then again, maybe I'm just going nutters lol. Good luck and blessings, Prana

I have been on Metformin about 3.5 months and I never experienced what you are experiencing. I am sorry you are not feeling so hot on it and hope you start to feel better soon.

I just started Met on Monday (PCOS DIAGNOSED 9/05) I am new to this board also. I haven't had the funny taste, but definantly the potty issues. I am on 1000mg a day. I feel like I cannot leave my house once I get here. I also feel like i'm gonna barf, everytime I look at food. Hope you feel better soon!!!

Ok, I lied my before response was referring to the funny smells and vomit feelings. I did have potty issues and a swollen tummy for the first month or so.

A little update. Started Met on Sunday so it's been five days. My 'potty problems' and nausea are all but gone and I feel a lot better. I hope you all feel better to. Just a word of advice, the less fat you eat the better you'll feel. Good luck and blessings, Prana

The first round I took I lost my appetite. Nothing sounded good to eat and I'd have to force myself sometimes. Never had a problem with smells.

Unfortunately this time my appetite is just fine. That's great the potty issues are gone.

Now I have lost my appetite but the potty issues remain. My husband joked the only reason you will loise weight using it is because you're always in the potty.

hahaha I told him it wouldn't be as funny if you were in my position would it? Men can be so insensitive.

When I was TTC with my son, I took met for roughly a year, starting clomid about halfway through. That time around I had no troubles at all, but this time Im getting abit of the nausea, especially when I eat something too sugary or fatty. Its not too bad though. One thing my dr said to do this time was the start out slower. I only took one pill a day for the frist week, then started the twice a day regimen a week later. I have managed to avoid any potty troubles.

The only s/e I got from metformin was the potty issues, but that went away after a few days. I can't say I've ever heard anyone say that things smell different or weird while on metformin. Everyone is different.

Glad you are feeling better now though, hopefully the smell thing will go away also.

I am also new to this board, i didn't realize that this was a common disease.. aAnyway i started metformin last thursday and i have experienced the potty issues, but nothing else...i hope the smells don't start bothering me i work with 3 year olds in daycare and some are potty training
