Default New here- Glucopahage ??

Hi All,

I am new to this "support network", Where do I start! Me and my hubby have been ttc for 1+year. Tried the clomid 3X- didn't work. I do NOT ovulate (so the doctor says) My Progesterone level is below normal. I don't get a period on my own I have been diagnosed with PCOS, currently taking 2000mg of Glucophage XR. I just wonder how long anyone else has been on Glucophage & has it helped? Is anyone else w/out a period and no ovulation? I feel like I am the only one in the world w/3 things aganist me!

ALSO for all you PCOS woman... I did read that if you follow the "south beach diet" that you have a much HIGHER rate of conception. A doctor has been doing a 4 year study w/IVF patients and found that cutting out SUGAR and Carbs that you help the insulin and stimulate your ovaries and helps to get prego, and helps the egg stay strong, so there is a better chance of survival. SO that is my new thing... Starting today actually. Wish me luck!

I would love to hear some feedback.

I took 1500 mgs of Gluc and then 2000 during my IVF and once I was on the Gluc, my cycles were regulated. I also did the South Beach Diet for a while. It is always worth a try, different people react to different things, but it can't hurt to try. I was on the XR also and never really had problems with it. I had irregular periods and my ovaries would putter out and not ovulate, but the Gluc snapped them into shape.

I have/had anovulatory cycles. I tried 1500 mg of gluc. and it didn't help me ovulate. I went off it to try an ivf cycle w/o it. After that one failed, I went back on it at 2000 mg. I still didn't ovulate so my endo added 30mg of actos. I did one medicated cycle for a test I needed and then I had 5 cycles on my own!! I was shocked. I think it was the increased dose and the actos together.

Good luck with your diet.

With my first pgcy, I conceived just with exercise and low carbing it. It took 6 mos until I conceived. When ttc #2 that didn't work at all. I guess the PCOS just got worse. It was strange, though, before my first, I hadn't been having any AFs and then once I started exercising and low carbing, I had them regularly. After having Asher, I had AFs (not totally regular, but anywhere from 42-60 day cycles. Once my doc put me on glucophage, my cycles became "regular" 33-35 day cycles, but I also had to exercise regularly. I didn't do the South Beach diet completely, but I did watch my carbs a bit. It took 10 months of having seemingly regular cycles... I charted and had times when it LOOKED like I was ovulating, but after the cycle I had when I conceived this one, I think that was the first time I really actually ovulated instead of my body "going through the motions" so to speak, of ovulating. My doc did warn me that it takes 6-9 mos for the gluc to really get in and regulate your system. For me it was 10mos, but the gluc made me so sick, I just stayed on 750mg. So, I feel pretty darn fortunate that it worked at all. In anycase, you should stay on the gluc for at least the first 12wks of pgcy, some docs, like mine, want you on it the entire pgcy. That's just up to you and your doc. If you are strongly insulin resistant, I'd bet your doc will have you stay on it as there is evidence that it helps prevent GD.

Most of all, keep your chin up. It is so difficult when it's just not happening (It was actually about a year and a half of trying/wanting/hoping with each pgcy for me.) It really sounds like your doc has you on a great program. I have a lot of faith in the gluc/exercise/low carb plan as it has helped me! It may take some time, so don't give up too quickly!
