Default Metformin and pregnancy-question

Hi fellow PCOSers,

I'm currently pregnant with twins after an injectible/IUI cycle and continue to take Metformin. My RE thinks I should continue it the whole pregnancy. With my first pregnancy she had me take it the first trimester. Anyways-for those of you who take it for PCOS-what have your doctors suggested? What have you done during your pregnancies?
THanks for your help!

I took metformin for the first trimester of my pregnancy and then my OBGYN wanted me to stop. My situation is a little difference since my OBGYN was not the one who prescribed me metformin, I was participating in a study for women with PCOS who were trying to get pregnant. So I think my OBGYN wanted me to stop after 12 weeks because she wasn't really familiar with it, I only went to her because she was a doctor that took my insurance and delivered at the hospital I wanted....My regular OB had just moved and changed insurances so I couldn't go back to him like I wanted.

Anyway, there are some ladies who were pregnant around the same time as me with PCOS and their OB's kept them on met their entire pregnancy and some told them to stop after 12 weeks. I think it's all up to the doctors and how they feel about the chances of met helping with women not having miscarriages.

Good luck with your pregnancy and hope you have two happy and healthy little ones.

Hi. I was told to stop at 12 weeks as well. I tried to get my ob to let me stay on it in the hopes that I wouldn't develop GD but he wouldn't agree. I stopped taking it and ended up with GD. Every doc is different.

Hi Julie,

I, too, was told to stop taking it at 12 weeks, but now I am fighting to prevent GD. I have to take my blood sugars 4 times a day and watch what I eat very closely. I am hoping that as I get closer to the end if the sugars start to go up, the dr. will let me go back on the met. instead of going to insulin. He has already threatened me with daily shots along with my finger pokes and that is just somewhere I don't want to go.

I think it depends on your dr, but according to www.safefetus.com, it is safe to take throughout your pregnancy.

Both my RE and Ob/Gyn had me take it through out my entire pregnancy, so I didn't develop GD. In my case they said the benefits outweighed the risk and said it was best for me and the baby. At the hospital I delivered at however the first thing they wanted to do was check the baby's sugar. Since I was on met they wanted to make sure her sugar was not low. We had no problems, and I continue to take Met even while I'm not trying to help keep my sugar level. I am not a diabetic, but my sugar can get into some really serious swings and get very low.

I researched as much as I could before I got pg about Metformin & took what I found to my dr. She read through it & did her own research......and we've decided to keep me on it throughout the entire pregnancy.

Since I'm expecting twins, I'm also being monitored by a high risk dr, and he agrees with this. Haven't been tested for GD yet, probably in a couple of weeks, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Met is doing it's job!
