Default Metformin/Glucophage & BFP

Ladies,

I just wanted to know for those of you that are pregnant or just became pregnant and are currently taking Metformin/Glucophage...
Are you continuing to take it?

I'm currently taking Metformin HCL ER 500 everyday for PCOS only.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply...it's so confusing because I have heard that it's good
to stay on the medication, but my obgyn told me not to take it anymore.
I'm afraid it will interfer with my glucose levels...so I will ask my obgyn if
she can do the glucose test earlier than 6 months. Just in case I've been
watching not to eat sugary stuff & high carbs.

Take Care,

Marquita

Hi there! I stayed on it (2000mg XR) for my whole pregnancy and then for a few months after. I stopped because I was tired of taking pills, but gained weight so now i'm back on it again...

My perinatologist recommended I stay on the Met during my pregnancy. April came out pretty normal

I was on it while ttc only. Once I got my bfp, my RE said not to take it any more. I was on 2000 mg daily. HTH!

When I was pregnant my perinatologist (I was high risk and saw the peris and my regular ob) took me off when I reached my 2nd trimester as he said there are no studies on the safety of taking it after the 1st trimester. I did have gd but we knew that early on b/c my previous pregnancy i had it as well. I had a monitor and was checking my sugars regularly. I am not on it now b/c it kills my stomach. It didn't do it to me the 1st time I took it but it was so bad that I went to the gi b/c i thought it was gallbladder attacks. But it was the metformin. I may call my ob one of these days to see ift here is some other medicine. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I guess just ask your ob his/her opinion on if you should take it of nor.

Hi there,
I have been on Met ER 500mg 2x a day since first diagnosed with PCOS. I became preg in 2004 w/ ds and stayed on it the whole pregnancy. Now I am currently pregnant w/ baby #2 and I will continue to take it during the whole pregnancy again. In doing my research and talking to my RE she said studies have shown that taking it atleast through the first trimester signifcantly reduced the already higher than normal m/c rate in woman with PCOS. HTH

Hi! I am new here- My name is Stacy, I was told that I might have PCOS about 1 1/2 years ago. I was told to try to take BCP and adjust my diet. That worked I have had 2 BFP this year but ended up with a MC(8wks) and D&C(13wks). This Monday was my second D&C and my doctor had a bunch of blood and tests taken. She told me Yes it was PCOS and I could probably start some meds the next time I get BFP. It seems that most of you are already taking meds before you TTC. I need to know how to stay pregnant I can't keep going through this. Any suggestions on things I could do to stay healthy? I have a 10 yr old son so I know that it is possible for me to have a child. I am 33yrs. old. Sorry to ramble I am just an emotional mess I hope you can understand because my DH doesn't.

Hi Stacy,

Our stories seem to be almost identical, only I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS yet. I have just had my 3rd m/c (8 weeks) and d&c last thursday and was on progesterone and clexane and my OB has no answers for me. I've been doing my own research for some answers and appear to have most of the symptoms that go with PCOS. I have a follow-up app with my OB on monday and I'm definatley going to bring this up with him. I will let you know what he says from my side.

I think this is the hardest part of the m/c, apart from the loss of the little miracle, is not knowing why and wondering if you'll have to go through it again the next time you try!

Please, please let me know if you find out anything. I'm determined to make my next one work!

Lots of love and support to you. XXXXX

Hi Yolande,

I'm so happy for you and will hold thumbs for you and your baby. Just wanted to say thank you for your message. You have given me a glimmer of hope, where yesterday there was none.

I have to take until I am 12 weeks. I take 1500 mg. I can't wait to get off the stuff.

Stacy, I am not diagnosed with PCOS but my RE said my family history does not rule it out. For my IVF fresh cycle and my Frozen cycle, I began taking metaformin a couple months before I did my cycles. You might go on the IVF boards and ask about different bloodwork that was completed for multi-m/c. There are so many reasons, progesterone low, PCOS, etc. A consult with a RE would not be bad either. Good Luck in finding the reasons.

With my daughter Makenzie my doctor had never truly dealt with someone pregnant and on Metformin. I asked her to research it before she took me off and when she did she came back and told me to stay on it till I was 13 weeks. This pregnancy I wasn't on anything when I got pregnant so she is not going to put me on anything now. Good luck!

Sorry it has been so long I haven't been quite up to doing much. Thank you Tricia and Micah for the support. All my blood test came back normal I was carrying a normally developing baby girl. My doctor put me on Fortamet 1500mg. I don't really notice anything except upset stomach. Should I be feeling or noticing anything else? How do I know if this is working for me?

Hi there!

We seem to have almost the identical issues. My bw also came back normal apart from clotting tendancies and insulin resistance (high fasting insuling and glucose levels) and we also had a normal developing little girl. I am on Glucophage 500mg (since monday). I have to admit that I do feel better (not drastic differences) - more energetic, more mentally alert, and yes, also have a funny tummy. Perhaps it just takes time for your boddy to adjust. O'm sure blood tests will show if the medication is working. Is your doc going to monitor the drug's performance? Mine said it should take about 3 to 4 weeks to get the levels down to 'normal'.

Keep me updated, I'm very interested to hear how my fellow 'drugees' are fairing :o))) {{{hugs}}}

Good luck and lots of love
