Default Just diagnosed...

I hope its ok that I post here! I'm not anywhere near trying to concieve!

My name is Halei, I'm 19 and a sophmore in college. I just had an appointment a few weeks ago after not having a period for 7 months(try convincing the office over the phone that really, I'm 100% sure it is not pregnancy!) and just got a call today. The nurse told me I wasn't ovulating and that it was PCOS, and that she would send me some information in the mail. She also said the best treatment was being on the pill, which they did put me on.

My questions is, is this a serious problem? She didn't make it seem like a big deal at all, but I got totally different reactions from room-mates, who I guess aren't too realiable

I know it can cause fertility problems, just from reading up on it. But is it fairly easy to get pregnant from medication? And I have noticed weight gain for a while, but is it just something that develops or have I always had it? Do I just eat less?

I just don't know what to think: the nurse didn't think it was a big deal and my mom didn't either...am I downplaying it or should I be more concerned?

Thanks so much!
Halei

Halei welcome. It is not "serious" per say. There are a few things you have to watch and be concerned about. If you have PCOS and are insulin resistant (IR) you have a higher risk on having adult on set diabeties as well as gestational diabeties while pregnant. Weight seems to be an issue for some woman with PCOS but not all as with facial and body hair. Both of those are common with PCOS but not all woman have those symptoms. I am not obese and do not have excess body hair, but I am IR and do not make a lot of the female hormones. Many woman with PCOS are able to get pregnant on fertility drugs however there are several woman who have to go another route and use IVF to get pregnant. You are lucky in the fact you have been diagnosed now prior to TTC. Often woman are not diagnosed with PCOS until after several failed cycles of TTC. Please feel free to post and ask any questions you may have. The woman on this board are wonderful and will do their best to answer your questions!

Same thoughts here, we just joined this site 2nite as some very unkind people were tearing my wife and I to bits on another Forum because she is TTC with PCOS
She Suzanne(my wife) has had PCOS for as long as Ive Known her for 10years she has a unexplained distended tummy breast size gone up from a 32d/34d(normal for her up and down in the last 10years) to a 40c in the last 4months!
Weight gain from 9stones(up and down just a bit) in the last 10years, to 11stones in 4months
Doctor said it maybe PCOS but Suzanne don't eat much and the P test said NO but Doctor didn't quite believe it!
Had an internal scan 2day and Doctor still not sure of Suzanne's tummy bulge!
anyway nice to meet up on our first visit to this site cu sn Suzs&Cas x

Please post anytime. I totally agree with Keri. PCOS can become a problem but I think you are okay since it was caught early on. The best part is that when you do decide to TTC you already know where to start.

Thanks so much for clearing that up! I just got the packet in from the doctor today. It said the key is to lower the insulin intake and exercise. Any suggestions on lowering insulin intake? I have no idea where it comes from...where was I when we learned this? lol...

Halei to lower your insulin intake watch your carb and sugar intake in the morning and in the evening when you have carbs just make sure for every 1 carb you have 2 proteins. It is harder for the body to break down carbs and sugars in the early morning and in the late evening. Also, try not ot eat after 6:30 if you can avoid it so your body has time to break down what you have eaten before you go to bed.

Thanks Keri! You've been a great source of information!
I havent eaten after 630 in the past 3-4 days, been drinking lots of water, and I've been researching diet changes!

I'm trying to get my weight under control, because it is the one thing that has been the craziest! I lost 20lbs freshman year, and I've gained back that 20, plus about 13 more this year! Hopefully I wont be gaining more
