Just diagnosed
Hi,
I usually post on the IVF board, but I was just diagnosed with PCOS. I am supposed to start taking metformin tonight. I am a little nervous because both the nurse and the doctor have said that it can be difficult to adjust to the medication. They told me to try to "grin and bear it" for a month as much as I can. Any hints? Is it horrible? They told me to start taking it a bedtime. Do you take it with or without food?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

Re: Just diagnosed
DEFINITLEY take it with food or milk. I started taking 500 mg every night with dinner and I'm now up to 1500 mg. So far, I haven't had any side effects, but I've heard if you take it on an empty stomach you will pay for it! My RE's nurse said that most people have the hardest time adjusting from 1500 to 2000 mg (I'll make that jump next week).
Anyway, good luck to you. I am newly diagnosed as well. I've found this board to be a big help and comforting to know that others are going through the same things.

Re: Just diagnosed
Welcome to the board. I am not on any meds right now and have never been on that one. I have only been on Clomid and I didn't like it. We start seeing a RE soon. There is a post about books on PCOS and Infertility you should check some of the books out they are pretty helpful.

Re: Just diagnosed
I always take it with food. I take 2000 mg. This was the order: dinner, lunch, breakfast and dinner (added the last 500 to make 1000 for dinner and 2000 for the day). Each week I added 500 mg. The more gradual, the better, at least for me.
Potty problems can occur. It's one of the most common s/e's of it.

Re: Just diagnosed
Take it with food especially if you aren't on the extended release. And avoid anything with lots of sugar for the first few weeks. One bowl of ice cream and you could spend the entire next day on the toilet. Also if you're taking a vitamin I would suggest not taking it at the same time as your met. That always made my stomach hurt really bad. Good luck to you!

Re: Just diagnosed
Thanks for the advice. So far it hasn't been too bad. I called the nurse this morning because I've been having muscle aches and pains. She said not to worry and to try to take the met at dinner instead of bedtime. I'll try that tonight.
Thanks again!
