Default For how long RX?

Hi Gals..I just have a question regarding Glucophage/Metformin
I was given this RX when I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 years ago.
I wasn't ovulating & wanted to get pregnant. Once I got pregnant
I got off the medication, but after I stopped breastfeeding my Dr.
put me back on Metformin ER (slow release) 500MG & I asked her
for how long and she said, FOR LIFE I'm not sure if there's
long term consequences of taking this RX for life...???
It has helped me ovulate & maintain my weight. I'm not diabetic,
but my grandmother was. Has one else been told this?? FOR LIFE?
I'm not trying to conceive right now...not sure if I would stop ovulating
again if I quit taking them...What's going on? Should I get a 2nd opinion?
or one you are diagonosed with PCOS your pretty much a LIFER?

Thanks

I was diagnosed with PCOS and asked the same question, "How long do I have to take this for" and she said it depends on my cycle. As easy as my cylcles went from normal to irregular (every 4 or 5 months) it could also correct itself. So LIFE for now unless something drastic changes for me.

Regular liver function tests would probably be good. I can't think of anything else that it would "hurt" by taking it. I think that PCOS sets us up for potential problems in the future so if taking it helps prevent them then I would, JMO. If you would feel more comfortable with a second opinion then I would get one.

My regular endocrinologist is the one in charge of treating me with gluc now. My RE started me on it, however, the endo is the specialist in that area so I'm more comfortable with him taking over.
