Default Glucophage/metformin alternatives

My dr. put me on Metformin, which she said was the same as glucophage? I am obviously allergic as I broke out in a rash. I was on bc to control my pcos and then we began to ttc. Which I was pg 2 mths. after stopping bc. We had & lost our daughter and are going to ttc again in a few months so I won't get back on bc. Are there other ways to treat pcos besides glucophage/metformin or bc?

Mere, I'm so sorry for your loss and for metformin not working for you. There are many different alternatives to help with PCOS. Each person responds differently to each medication. There is Clomid, which is used to help you ovulate. There is metformin/glucophage, which is for insulin resistance but is also used to help maintain a regular cycle. Another medication is Ferama (sp?), which I believe is used for ovulation. You are also able to try injectibles, IUI's, and IVF. Some of the other things you can try is a strick diet, exercise, vitamins, etc. There are some really good links in the Welcome Message thread that have information about PCOS.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Your DR will get you on the right meds soon! It is a trial and error thing with this stuff. Good luck. I am also sorry about your loss. Hang in there.

I am so sorry about your loss. I was right there with you about 2 years ago.. and now I have a healthy 9 month old baby girl. I agree with the other girls, it is a trial and error thing and different for everyone. Femara and injectables was my combination. Clomid worked at first but ended in m/c.

Good luck!

On a side note.. One thing my Endo found is that very often women with PCOS have a Blood disorder as well that causes premature birth (m/c mostly but sometimes prematurity). Have them check your anticardiolipin levels just to make sure. After 2 m/c they finally found this issue and I had to take Heparin the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to stop my placenta from clotting causing m/c or premature birth.

Good luck!! and Baby Dust to you!!!
