Default what book do you recommend?

I have a $50 gift card for Chapters ( a huge bookstore in Canada) Anyways, I was going to order Understanding Exposure, and I was thinking about Understanding Shutter Speed.
I'm going to go see how much they are in store, but I think they are like $27 and online on their website they are $18.
Anyways, if you had to recommend a book for a beginner, what would it be?
I have a Nikon D40, so should i look at camera specific books?

Definitely Understanding Exposure. It's a great beginner book and he explains things in an easy to understand way.

I second the Understanding Exposure one. Don't know anything about the other book you mention.
Are you editing with photoshop? Scott Kelby books for the version of photoshop you're using is invaluable. I say get that one too if you're working with photoshop.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am definitely getting understanding exposure. Understanding Shutter Speed is by the same author. I will look into that photoshop book b/c I am a psp user and I find it a bit of a challenge to switch to PS after using PSP for so long.
