This is a discussion on Tell me about HSG... within the TTC - After Vas/Tubal Reversal forums, part of the Trying to Conceive - Issues category; I am going to ask my Dr about this.Should I ask the OB or thr RE?I want to ...
I am going to ask my Dr about this.Should I ask the OB or thr RE?I want to have this test done..I guess to ease my mind.Does anyone know if insurance covers it?I am hoping they do.If they dont I am still having it done.Is it painful? What should I expect during it?Oh also when should I get it done?Should I get it done after af?I heard also you were more fertile after it..I know in Diannes case she was....
Im not sure who you would ask.
It is not done by your family dr.
In my case, its done by a radiologist that my reproductive endocrinologist referred me to. And being in Canada, it was free of course, i have no idea if insurance in the states covers it.
Some people feel alot of pain, some people feel very little.
I had mild cramping during and after. I was told that for some people, the tubes go through spasms and this is why it hurts.
You put on a gown, lie on a table, and they insert a speculum into the vagina.
Then they feed a long tube up past the cervix and into your uterus and inject a dye that shows up on the screen. They get you to roll this way and that....
Here they recommend it between day 8-10 of the cycle to be sure there is no pregnancy, as it would terminate the pregnancy.
I was told not to have intercourse for 48 hours following to limit chance of infection due to introducing bacteria into an open, possibly irritated cervix, but this is not the same for everyone.
Good luck.

I think my insurance covered a part of it. It was a little painful, and was alittle cramping afterwards but just take some over the counter pain meds. I have also heard that it clears your tubes out some so it is more likely to get pg afterwards. Good Luck with it.
My insurance did not cover it, but my RE has a deal worked out with the place that did it, and they only charged me $200. Not sure on if it has made me more fertile. Last hsg i got done was in August and I got pregnant the following cycle. Miscarried. Just had another one last month, and it did not get me pregnant. Now we are taking a break til July or August. My first one did not hurt very much at all, this one did hut more but i think it was because I didnt take advil first, and I did last time.
Still not quite sure why you feel you need to do this, as you have a baby who is just under 1. Did you nurse? That will certainly put fertility on hold. Good luck though.
I had my HSG on the 11th to see my tube length on the uterus side. I told my OB/GYN I wanted one done,so she set it up. I think my insurance has covered it,I haven't gotten a bill yet if they didn't.
Thanks for all the info..I told you I just want to put my mind at ease...I feel my left side is blocked..I dont know why I just do...They do a HSG at t/r surgery right? Is it true scar tissue can be built up again and block the tube?I am just a worried thats all.
personal opinion is that you should ttc for 6 months, and if at that time there is still no success, then get the hsg done.
Usually if scar tissue is going to build up, its going to do it right away.

was just going to add, i think its weird how your last two cycles show your Peak days AFTER ovulation,. I wonder why that would be? it detect LH which is excreted up to 36 hours BEFORE the egg is released.

I know that is weird..Do you think I am really ovulating? What do you think is causing that?.I think I will listen to you.I have been trying since Feburary. So if not pregnant by July I will get it done...They say after using the monitor 4 months you should be pregnant. This is my 3rd cycle...Shilo thanks for all th info you are always so helpful...
You're welcome Leslie.
And yeah, it is weird... your temps look like you are ovulating quite well.... i dont know why your monitor is showing peak days that dont coincide with your charting.... the monitor picks up lutenizing hormone.. which should not at all be present after o.... maybe you added them in on the wrong days? any chance?

No I added them on the right days..I am suppose to seT the monitor the morning after I see red blood right...My monitor says I am on cd 2.Chart says CD 3 ..So should I change my chart to CD 2 ?I am confused ....
no, dont change your chart.
i just thought maybe when you put your 'P' on your ff chart, that perhaps you were off a day or sumthing, like maybe when you put your P in for cycle day 15 and 16 that it was actually day 13 and 14 and you just made a mistake. (like thinking its tuesday when really its monday)
it is weird though
it detects lutenizing hormone and its odd that it is detecting the surge after ovulation has occurred.
i dont know if you are using the paid version of FF, but if you are, maybe search through charts that use the fertility monitor and see if that is a common occurance.

I had heard horror stories about the HSG test but mine did not hurt at all. Initially both tubes were blocked but at the last minute I felt a pop and my right tube opened up. My RE did mine and it was partially covered by insurance.
Is it ok that my monitor says CD2 and chart says CD3 ...Maybe I should put my monitor on CD 3 too..I wonder if it is my fault because I am setting the monitor wrong....
Shilo, I looked up charts..What I could find as it does happen.I seen the charts that ovulated after peak had a progesterone def..You think I need to go get some progesterone? Is it true that after t/r that woman have low progeterone?I did have to take it with Thayaden..
Charts that ovulated after peak are normal.
the peak happens BEFORE you ovulate.. its when the Lutenizing Hormone is at its peak. this hormone causes the follicle wall to rupture, allowing the egg to burst out.
Having a peak AFTER ovulation however, seems weird.
Ive never heard anything about tr ladies having low progesterone.
Progesterone is created from the corpus luteum, the left over part from the bursting egg.
As long as a good mature egg bursts out, there should in theory be enough progesterone created from the corpus luteum that you shouldnt have progesterone issues. Some women with ovulation problems have progesterone issues.
Did you have a progesterone problem with Thayaden? or were you just put on progesterone for good measure?

My progesterone with Thayaden kept dropping. Not really bad..The lowest I had it to was 19.It was 36 then dropped to 19.So I ask the Dr to put me on progesterone..After having 2 m/cs back to back that might have been the problem...I dont know.I hope this cycle it is better..I hope to Ovulate on Cd 14 like normal but who knows..I changed my chart because the first day I put light but it was more of spot..So now I am on CD 2 again I hope that helps..
My progesterone dropped to 15 from 30, but my doctor didnt 'beleive' in progesterone to secure a pregnancy, luckily all went well!
on ff, cycle day 1 is the first full day of flow. not spotting.

to answer your questions, you can have a HSG done anytime. for a HSG after TR they say to wait 3-6 months, some say a year after the TR. I had my HSG done to see tube length. To see if I can have a TR.
From what I have read about progesterone. TR ladies with shorter tubes may need progesterone to prepare the uterus for a possible early implantation.
Hey Leslie, ur right, having a HSG certainly made me fertile for that cy .
Usually, a HSG will be done between CD7 -10, I dont know if it will be covered by ur insurance, I did not have to pay anything here in Australia .
It can be painful, but if u take plenty of Panadol or Tylenol (pain killers) about an hour b4 the procedure, it should help tremendously. I had minimal cramping and minimal spotting/bleeding with my HSG.
Can I ask, how long have u been TTC since Thayaden was born?? I would wait until u have been TTC for at least 6 consecutive cy's and then look into a HSG.
Like u though, I had a feeling that my left side was blocked and my hunch was right .
GL!!
