OT ladies, need a second opinion re: ds, I don't trust doctors...
Rj, the 4yr. old has had green mucos, not runny, staying thick and in his nose and comes to me to blow it. It's been this way for 11days and I took him to the ped on last Friday, day 7 and he said he's fine.
How long do you think is normal to have this? Remember, it's not thinning and it's not changing color. I can't stand doctors.

IS there any fever? And have you tried any over the counter meds?

no fever and I haven't tried any OTC because they all really just try to stop it. But in the past I have tried Mucosex the help thin it but I'm out right now. I'm so mad because the preschool he goes to won't let him come to school with this, and I understand that, but tomorrow is picture day and it's his first preschool picture and they said he could come for the picture only and then has to go home. Dh and I talked about this and didn't really understand it. They don't want him there all day around other children but they will have him there for a few hours to take pics. I said, no, that's alright, I don't understand your reasoning to have him there for pic but not the rest of the day.

There is a lot of controversy out there right now about how to treat upper respiratory infections in children younger than 6. Because over the counter meds have not been shown to be incredibly effective in this age group and because the risk of side effects is higher the younger the child, a lot of pediatricians are either discouraging their use or telling parents to use them sparingly. Also, since the rate of drug resistant staph in children is rising, doctors are really trying to balance that with when an antibiotic is truly necessary. The newest research on sinus infections showed that with or without antibiotics the infections cleared up in about the same amount of time (which averaged about 2 weeks.)
If your son has a persistent fever, has difficulty breathing, has significantly altered sleep or eating patterns, becomes lethargic or highly irritable, then the doctor might consider doing something different. Otherwise he/she will probably just tell you to ride it out with lots of fluids and lots of handwashing. However, since this is causing him to be excluded from school for an extended period of time, I would recommend checking back with the doctor and seeing how long you should expect this to go on before his/her recommendations change.

Im sorry to hear your poor little one is going threw such terrible things, and tobe excluded from preschool must be hard on him.Have you tried antibiotics?? I went threw similiar with Chicken Pox last month. I was allowed to bring my spotted child with me to school, on the grounds, even in the halls to drop off their brothers, BUT they werent allowed to attend all day? It made me mad, still mad over it......Again, Im sorry, hope you get releif from this!

the ped said there wasn't anything wrong with him so no meds were perscribed. And the Bella and Jack have it too. Bella I'm more concerned about and will take in if she not better soon.

since the mucus is green, there is infection somewhere. He could have a slight sinus infection,or a slight ear infection. I have had my children be sick with both and not run a fever and not complain with anything hurting. If he doesn't get better within the next few days I would demand some antibiotics.

I would definitely watch Bella more carefully because babies tend to have more complications from upper respiratory infections than older children do. Here's the links to the info I quoted. I hope all the kids get better soon!

I forgot to say that the CDC FAQs sound a bit patronizing/condescending at times but it does have some good information.
Max had a string of colds in the fall and I swear I thought I'd never get to take him to school again. Luckily the spring has been a bit better for us. Hope your spring gets better soon!

thanks again ladies for all the info. I will be watching and probably taking all of them to the ped this week, that's what we have insurance for. thanks again.
